Well, then, why are we making everyone register before posting a comment now?

Then answer is that we hope it will be better for everyone. Our goal is to create a place where honest discussion can take place in real time. When registration is not required someone on staff has to approve each post. On weekends and late at nights, that tends to be a problem. With registration anyone with a computer and a hankering to say something, can start a new discussion, weigh in on an ongoing conversation or comment on something we've reported, and they'll be able to see it posted immediately since we no longer have to approve the comments.

We welcome anyone's thoughts, but please be civil, courteous and respect that others might have a difference of opinion. We're neighbors here. Don't forget that.

Users must provide a user name and an e-mail address to sign up. They can then pick any screen name as long as it's not in use already. After those few steps are taken care of, registered users can comment on any story, post new discussion threads and really start becoming part of a growing and exciting community.
