Tazewll County awarded grant for flood mitigation

A $332,505 grant from the Virginia Department of Conservation and Recreation will be used to find solutions to the flooding problem in the county.

Supervisor Shanna Plaster told the Richlands Town Council at its Oct. 11 meeting that the county will contribute $36,945 in matching funds to bring the total amount to $369,450. She said the money will be used to find ways to prevent the flooding that have hits parts of the county over the last few years.

The study will focus heavily on Richlands, Doran and Raven that have a history of heavy flooding. Plaster said Bandy would also be included in the study.

The letter informing the county it was awarded the funds said the Virginia Resource Authority would send an award package outlining all requirements in the coming weeks. The application was for staffing and planning assessments.

The grant resulted from a partnership the county entered into last March with First Earth 2030 a Richmond based eco-asset management firm. The company has an office in the New River Valley that will handle the work in Tazewell County.

“We are pleased that Tazewell County has selected First Earth to begin a partnership. Our team is eagerly exploring solutions and funding streams for coal country to help answer the climate and economic needs of the moment,” said Tee Clarkson, Principal of First Earth — 2030.

The press release from the company said the funds will support future applications to the same funding stream or other grant sources for projects that ameliorate flooding risks in Tazewell County. Reduced risks will improve quality of life and increase the sound management of natural resources.

Next, FE’s team will aid the County in scoping and applying for additional grant funding for trails and outdoor recreation, community services, and economic development.
