Graham versus Union highlights week three football games
Week three of high school football will be the first one that sees all three county teams in action.
Graham 1-1 at Union 2-0
Get to Big Stone Gap early if you want a seat for this one. For the last several years the regular season meeting between these two has set the stage for a rematch in the Region 2D playoffs.
This year should be no different. The Bears have not given up a point so far having beaten Lee 40-0 and Daniel Boone 42-0 in the first two games under new coach Jamie Harless.
Graham opened the season by scoring 40 in a win over arch rival Beaver. Quarterback Garrett Palmer led the charge with over 300 yards of offense. They were held to six points in a loss to Heritage in a game that saw Palmer go down with a leg injury.
Freshman Jai’erre Hamler rushed for 138 yards on just 10 carries and scored two touchdowns for Union in the win over Daniel Boone. Quarterback Abe Hall rushed for 100 yards on 12 carries and also threw a touchdown pass. Kaden Dillman and Rayvon Jones reached the end zone as well.
The Bears held Boone to just 115 yards of offense and intercepted two passes.
Tazewell 1-0 at Grayson County 0-2
The Blue Devils won last year’s game at Tazewell 45-3. The last time they met prior to that was 2016 when the Bulldogs prevailed 49-36 in Independence. Grayson came to Tazewell in 2015 and won 26-13.
Grayson County lost its season opener 21-2 to Allegheny County North Carolina and fell to Carroll County 40-7 in week two. The Blue Devils lost the bulk of their starters from last year’s team that fell to Rye Cove 7-6 in the state semifinals
Tazewell had week one off before defeating Pulaski on the road 30-27 for its season opener last week.
Lee 1-1 at Richlands 0-2
The Tornado won last year’s game 42-7. That was the first meeting between the two schools since 1997 when the Generals prevailed 28-20 in the region finals. The Tornado handed Lee its largest loss in school history in 1994 winning 66-23. Lee bounced back with a 48-0 win in 1995.
After opening the season with a 40-0 loss to Union, Lee rebounded last week to beat Thomas Walker 34-6. Quarterback Clay Robbins and receiver Cutchin Wynn combined for three touchdowns.
Aiden Bates rushed for 108 yards on 19 carries and a touchdown. After letting Thomas Walker get on the board first, the Generals reeled off 34 straight points.
Richlands hopes a week off allowed several players to get healthy for the home opener. The Blue Tornado has scored just six points in its first two games and must find a way to move the ball against the Generals.
