People in the Chilhowie area breathed a sigh of relief Thursday afternoon when a fugitive wanted in multiple states was captured and taken into custody.
Federal, state and local police began a manhunt for Marcus Ramsey Thursday morning.
Ramsey had fled a traffic stop in Smyth County earlier this year. Thursday, he returned to get his car. Law enforcement was notified and when Ramsey saw officers arrive, he fled into woods near the Exit 32 area of Chilhowie, which is at the Smyth County-Washington County border.
He was found in the same vicinity.
During the day area residents were cautioned not to approach Ramsey and call 911 immediately if they saw him.
The Smyth County Sheriff's Office worked with the U.S. Marshals – Capital Area Regional Fugitive Task Force on the case.
U.S. Marshal Matthew Davis said, “In routine partnership with Sheriff Chip Shuler and his exceptional team and the Washington County Sheriff’s Office, the U.S. Marshals Service – Capital Area Regional Fugitive Task Force, Western District of Virginia, has adopted the outstanding felony warrants for apprehension associated with fugitive Marcus Ramsey.”
In Virginia, Ramsey was wanted on Felony Eluding and Possession of Ammunition by a felon. He was wanted on separate charges in Georgia.
Thursday night, Shuler expressed his gratitude “to all the agencies that have assisted with this case.”
Also Thursday night, Chilhowie Police Chief Andrew Moss told the Town Council that the manhunt had been “an all-day ordeal”.
