Students get a taste of Salt Works Civil War battles

On Friday, area school students, 4-H’ers, and homeschool students got the opportunity to visit with Civil War reenactors in Saltville. They learned about the battles, medical care during the war, games of the era, and much more. During a lesson on making salt, the students got to taste a drop of brine and saw how to boil it down into the precious commodity of salt. As their lessons wrapped up, they got to see and hear a cannon fire with a teacher instructing them on observing the sound waves. While the students complained earlier about walking half a mile, a teacher reminded them that during the Civil War many 14-year-olds were joining the troops and walking 10 to 12 miles a day in wool uniforms, A reenactment of the Battle of Saltville Stoneman’s Raid on the Salt Works and living history exhibits took place on Saturday and Sunday.
