Gate City no hits Marion
Rookie Gate City skipper Luke Francisco got his first head-coaching win as the Blue Devils mashed Marion 12-0 in a non-district clash.
Dylan Carter pitched a no-hitter with seven strikeouts and one walk.
“Carter commanded the zone well, and our defense made great plays behind him,” Francisco said. “When he is on the mound, we play confident.”
Jake Burns led Gate City (1-6) at the plate as he was 3-for-4 with a double, triple and seven RBIs.
“The bottom of our order did a great job of getting on base to give Burns the chance to drive them in,” Francisco said. “He puts in a ton of work and no one deserves it more than him.”
Francisco is an Abingdon High School graduate whose playing career also included time with the Carson-Newman University Eagles and the Appalachian League’s Bristol State Liners.
“I was really happy for the players to get their first win,” Francisco said. “They have been working hard, and it was exciting to see them succeed. … I am lucky to have great kids and the support of the Gate City community, and I am excited for the future of the program.”
Tazewell takes down Northwood
Braydon Roberts and Brody Myers each drove in two runs as Tazewell topped Northwood 7-3 and gave Mike Catron his first win as head coach of the Bulldogs.
Roberts and Jesse McGraw had two hits apiece, while winning pitcher Dakota Herndon struck out 12 in 6 1/3 innings.

Hank Rutherford went 2-for-3 and drove in both of PH’s runs. Blake Johnson and Hunter White had the other hits for the Rebels.
Gate City is led by first-year head coach Luke Francisco and travels to West Ridge on Monday and Abingdon on Tuesday. Francisco’s father, Mark, is the head coach at Abingdon.

Chilhowie pounded out a dozen hits in improving to 7-1 and cracked double digits for the sixth time in eight games.
Brent Kilbourne, Gavin Walker, Landon Bowman, Asher Chapman and Brycen Sturgill each had two hits. Chapman had three RBIs, Kilbourne drove in two runs and freshman Dylan Martin scored two runs.
Brent Tolbert’s solo home run with two outs in the bottom of the fifth inning accounted for Marion’s only run. Caden Hutton and Will Garrick had the other hits for the Scarlet Hurricanes.

Rebels blank Bearcats
Kolby Hicks struck out 11 in tossing a complete-game two-hit shutout as the Patrick Henry Rebels improved to 6-1 by blanking Virginia High 6-0.
Hicks issued two walks as 65 of his 99 pitches resulted in strikes.
“Kolby’s really starting to mature into the pitcher we knew he was capable of being,” said PH coach Eric Rutherford. “I thought his stuff was really good tonight and kept their hitters off balance. He has a lively fastball he can throw by you, and his offspeed was working well. We have stressed the importance of being more efficient and he has taken that seriously. I thought the defense played well behind him, and that helps as well.”
Along with being behind the plate to receive pitches from Hicks, PH catcher Hank Rutherford went 3-for-4 for the Rebels.
Aidan Monahan also had two hits.
Ollie Foy’s double to lead off the game and Carter Gemmell’s fifth inning single were the only hits for VHS.

She hit Jade Vencill with a pitch to begin the fourth inning but got Isabella Looney to bunt into a double play.

Chilhowie relay team triumphant
George Wythe’s Emma Faulkner and the relay team from Chilhowie triumphed in the annual track and field meet hosted by THS.
Great has been used to describe George Wythe junior Emma Faulkner, who had a win and a runner-up finish on Saturday.
“This was definitely a bigger meet, and I’ve never really ran against many of these schools,” Faulkner said. “I love the competition and they definitely pushed me.”
Faulkner won the 1,600 in 5:31.39, beating Daniel Boone’s Hannah Robinson (5:33) to the finish line.
“I was trying to target something a little lower,” Faulkner said. “But it was still pretty good in a competitive race.”
Faulkner clocked in at 11:45.77 in a 3,200-meter race won by Daniel Boone’s Sadie Honeycutt in 11:36.56. Faulkner passed Tennessee High freshman Olly Arrington (11:48.67) on the last lap to claim silver.
That was a pretty good field, huh?
“Absolutely,” Faulkner said.
Faulkner has won back-to-back titles in the 1,000-meter run in the VHSL Class 1 indoor track and field championships and won cross country gold back in November.
What keeps her pushing ahead?
“My goals,” Faulkner said. “Trying to get these college times.”
Chilhowie’s girls were victorious in the 4x400 relay as Abby Bogle, Alivia Dickison, Mady Heath and Raegan Jones had a triumphant time of 4:14.62.
They beat Tennessee High’s quartet of Jenna Reecher, Maddie Singleton, Zoey Phillips and Josie Tickle, who had a time of 4:20.60.
“One thing that is really cool is that we are all underclassmen except for Mady,” Jones said. “We get to be again together for the future.”
Dickison finished second in the girls high jump as well.
“We’re a small track team, so we have a lot of athletes in many events,” Jones said. “Everybody is just so great at what they do.”
