Marion upsets Pioneers
Caden Burchett and Hayden Hall made key plays down the stretch as the Marion Scarlet Hurricanes sprung the upset of Lebanon in a 65-57 Southwest District boys basketball victory on Wednesday night.
Marion trailed 44-37 after three quarters but outscored the Pioneers 28-13 over the final eight minutes.
Burchett had 15 of his game-high 25 points in the final quarter, while Hall had 11 of his 19 points in the fourth.
“I thought our kids showed a lot of heart tonight,” said Marion coach Jamie Hall. “They just played hard all night long. When Lebanon would go on a run our guys did a good job of not panicking and keeping the game close. Then in the fourth quarter I thought we did a great job getting defensive stops and getting a lot of easy transition buckets.”
Tyler Pierce added 10 points for the ‘Canes.
“We’re playing pretty good basketball right now and getting contributions from everyone,” Jamie Hall said. “I thought Cade and Hayden just refused to lose in that fourth quarter and the rest of the team picked up on that and had that same mindset. I’m really proud of how this team is playing right now.”
Ethan Horne led Lebanon (17-5, 6-3) with 24 points, while Mike Reece added 18 points. The loss by the Pioneers ensured Graham clinched the Southwest District regular-season title.
LEBANON (57) – Rasnake 0, Hilton 5, Garrett 3, Horne 24, Glass 3, Reece 18, Jessee 4.
MARION (65) – Hall 19, Hutton 2, Pierce 10, Hylton 9, Burchett 25, Perkins 0.
Lebanon 14 16 14 13—57
Marion 17 8 12 28—65
3-point goals – Lebanon 6 (Reece 3, Horne 2, Garrett), Marion 4 (Pierce 2, Hall, Hylton).
Rebels rout Northwood
Those Runnin’ Rebels of Patrick Henry are still rolling and there’s a good reason for their harmonious, high-scoring ways.
“It’s kind of like we’re psychic,” said PH senior Aidan Monahan. “We’ve been playing together long enough that we know where everybody’s at on the court.”
Patrick Henry's players were certainly on the same page in notching an 85-45 Hogoheegee District boys basketball victory over the Northwood Panthers on Tuesday night as the Rebels had nine different guys score and shot 53.4 percent from the field.
PH (17-3, 9-0) can wrap up the Hogoheegee District regular-season championship for a second straight year on Thursday with a win at Chilhowie.
Patrick Henry is averaging 72.3 points per game and has hung 80 or more points on an opponent eight times this season – including in its last three contests.
“They’re the best around here,” said Northwood coach Danny Greer. “They should win the region and go on to state and have a chance at a great run. … I wish we could have done a little bit better. I think we were just a little bit intimidated. That’s a great ball team right there.”
The Rebels also have one of the area’s best players in senior Cade Caywood, who stuffed the stat sheet on Tuesday to the tune of 29 points, eight rebounds, four steals, three assists and two blocks.
With 5:07 left in the third quarter, Caywood had 27 points and Northwood’s entire team had totaled 24 points at that time.
“He is a very, very fun kid to watch,” said PH coach Fred Selfe. “He’s good enough to hit a pull-up, he can post up, he can make a mid-range fadeaway. He can set up his teammates in ways you can’t even see. I really enjoy coaching him. He deserves a lot of the accolades and moments that are coming his way.”
Caywood has expanded his game in one major way.
“Probably inside for sure,” Caywood said. “Working around the paint more.”
Another guy not afraid to work in the post and crash the boards is Monahan, who had nine points, eight rebounds, four steals, three assists and one block on Tuesday.
“He is the trashcan man, who does the stuff that nobody pays attention to and we love him to death,” Selfe said. “He’s been playing the baseline in that 1-3-1 [defense] the last three years. If you were to put a tracker on him, he probably has four times as much movement as anybody else on the floor. Gets a lot of boards, gets a lot of tips. … Probably the definition of unselfish is Aidan Monahan. He’s definitely capable of scoring, but all he wants to do is get stops and play defense.”
He usually comes through.
“If we need a rebound, he’s going to get it and if we need a stop," Caywood said. "He's going to get it."
It's a role Monahan relishes.
“I take a lot of pride in it,” Monahan said. “Somebody’s got to do it, so I figured it might as well be me.”
Jeb Stewart (22 points, four assists) and Jay Barfield (10 points, six rebounds) also scored in double digits for the Rebels. PH outscored Northwood 33-16 in the third quarter.
“Everybody’s in the same boat after not being in the gym as much the last 2 ½ weeks [due to weather] but we’re trying to get our game legs back under us and it has been a struggle,” Selfe said. “I think we’ve had better second halves of the last two games, but I hate it’s taking us 16 minutes to get rolling. I’m hoping a day of practice [Wednesday] will get us in a better routine.”
Brody Waddle and Adler Little each scored 11 points for Northwood. Little had all of his points in the fourth quarter.
Northwood is currently 3-6 in league play and hosts Rural Retreat on Thursday in a key game. The Indians are 3-5 in the district and Holston has a 4-6 mark.
“We play with a lot of heart and a lot of effort,” Greer said. “Waddle’s playing great, senior Dalton Gates is playing terrific and has been putting up some points and Adler Little is shooting the ball better than he did at the beginning of the season. I hope we can have a good game on Thursday and get that third seed.”
The Hogoheegee’s main event on Thursday will see PH travel to Chilhowie’s cozy gym known as the “Hot Box” with plenty on the line. The Rebels already own two wins over Chilhowie this season by scores of 62-37 and 61-47.
The Warriors (13-8, 7-1) have won six straight and eight of their last 10.
PH beat Chilhowie in last year's VHSL Region 1D finals, while Chilhowie downed the Rebels in the semifinals of the 2024 regional tourney.
“I like that it's become a rivalry,” Selfe said. “Going to the Hot Box is obviously an experience. It’s going to be a special night. We’re just looking to play us, have fun and we’re going to enjoy the vibe.”
