Cavs edge Maroons
It wasn’t officially Senior Night for Holston High School’s baseball team on Wednesday at Backer Park, but in a way it was.
Collin Widener drove in Creed Maness with a two-out RBI single in the bottom of the eighth inning to give the Cavaliers a 7-6 walk-off win over non-district adversary George Wythe.
Widener and Maness happen to be the only 12th-graders on Holston’s roster.
“My two seniors really stepped up when we needed them to,” said Holston coach Josh Ezzell.
Widener finished 3-for-3 with two RBIs and scored two runs, while Eli Tweed’s two hits and Isaac Little’s two RBIs were also key as the dudes from Damascus improved to 2-5.
Freshman Carson Rouse threw 2 2/3 scoreless innings of relief to notch his first varsity victory.
“Good, gritty performance by the guys tonight,” Ezzell said. “We’ve got new faces all over the place and some youth. I thought Carson Rouse came on in relief and did a good job keeping them off balance to keep us in it.”
Cade Bralley had a home run, double and scored three runs for George Wythe. Brayden Frazier added two RBIs.
