Library Notebook: Used book sale set for Friday, Saturday
Can you believe we’re going into June already? That means the Friends of the Wythe County Library have their monthly used-books sale in the little red bookshop behind the main library, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. next Friday and 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. next Saturday.
It also means all your libraries are going into their Summer Reading Program, where you can get an entry into a drawing for prizes for every book you read or hear. Pick up the forms from your library. During June, we will be cooking recipes to celebrate National County Cooking Month and Caribbean Heritage Month.
This ongoing, self-guided program is open to all adults and requires no registration. Each month, the libraries feature themed cookbooks available for checkout. Participants are invited to select a recipe, prepare it at home, and take photos of their completed dish. Share your photos by email at wythegraysonlibrary@gmail.com to join the conversation and inspire others. Photos shared to the email will also be shared on our social media pages. Please state in the email that you want your photos shared.
The kickoff for the Summer Reading Program is all day Monday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Wythe County Public Library in Wytheville. Sign up for our program. T-shirts will be available for the first 25 kids depending on sizes and while supplies last.
The Meandering Mondays Book Club, a reader’s choice group, is also Monday (of course) at 1 p.m. at the Wythe County Public Library.
Mahjong Monday is a program for people interested in playing this traditional Chinese tile-based game with four players in each game who draw, discard, and claim tiles to form specific combinations and complete a winning hand. Beginners and experienced players are welcome.
And a Lego Club for kids and teens is set for Monday, from 4:30 to 6 p.m. also at the Wythe County Public Library. It’s going to be a busy Monday!
And activities are not going to slow down Wednesday, which starts with “Creative Thinking” Storytime for preschoolers at the Wythe County Public Library starting at 10 a.m. A meeting of the Adult Coloring Club follows at the same library at noon.
And the Fort Chiswell Public Library at Max Meadows offers a Triva Night also on Wednesday, from 5 to 6 p.m. Join the participants and test your knowledge.
On Thursday, we move to the Rural Retreat Public Library where a Cross-Stitch Bookmarks workshop starts at 2 p.m. for ages 13 and up. Learn to cross stitch and create a cross stich bookmark. Registration is required, and you can register by calling (276) 688-8337 starting on Monday.
A craft afternoon is set for Thursday from 4 to 6 p.m. at the Wythe County Public Library. Scavenge for a pet Dino at the library to adopt. All ages are welcome. For more information, call (276) 228-4951.
Shepherd Shakespeare will present “DinoShakes” Friday from 2 to 3 p.m. at the Wythe County Public Library. The premise is this: Mistakenly thrust back in time to when dinosaurs ruled the Earth, Will Shakespeare must survive using only his sharp wit and vast imagination. Are his stories enough to save him, or will he end up as a T-Rex's dinner? DinoShakes is a riotous Jurassic romp through some of Shakespeare's incredible stories.
The Twisted Stitchers also meet Friday at the same library at 2 p.m.
Dungeons & Dragons role-playing games are offered Friday from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Rural Retreat Public Library. Drop in and get your game on.
And there will be a Trivia Night on Friday starting at 6 p.m. at the Wythe County Public Library, always a popular event. All in all, your county libraries are offering activities for all ages in the week ahead.
