Virginia State Parks celebrates Kids to Parks Day with statewide activities (copy)
Virginia State Parks will join outdoor organizations across the country on Saturday, May 16, to celebrate Kids to Parks Day, a national day of outdoor play designed to connect children, families and communities with the great outdoors.
Hosted by the National Park Trust, Kids to Parks Day encourages young people to discover local, state and national parks while promoting active, healthy outdoor recreation.
All 44 Virginia State Parks will offer a variety of kid-friendly programs, including guided hikes, nature crafts, outdoor skills, wildlife programs, scavenger hunts, Junior Ranger activities and more.
“Kids to Parks Day is one of our favorite opportunities to inspire children to explore the outdoors,” said Virginia State Parks Chief of Education and Interpretation Katie Shepard. “Whether it’s turning over a log to find a salamander, joining a ranger-led hike or playing outside with family, these moments can spark a lifelong connection to nature.”
Many parks will offer free, ranger-led activities throughout the day, and families are encouraged to check their local park’s event listings for schedules and program details. Regular parking fees apply unless otherwise noted.
Farm Credit Knowledge Center accepting AgBiz Planner program applications (copy)
The Farm Credit Knowledge Center is now accepting applications for the 16th cohort of the AgBiz Planner program. AgBiz Planner is one of two agribusiness courses that Farm Credit University and the Knowledge Center at Farm Credit of the Virginias (FCV) offers yearly.
Since its inception, the AgBiz Planner program has hosted 85 participants from across FCV’s footprint, primarily young, beginning or small agricultural producers, business owners or those in agribusiness management. Applications for the 2026 AgBiz Planner program will be accepted through June 22. The program will begin in mid-July and conclude in mid-December.
AgBiz Planner is a hybrid, educational program with both in-person and online components designed for those who are interested in pursuing, actively involved with or transitioning into farming and/or agribusiness. Participants will work through 10 self-paced, online modules to gain knowledge to strengthen their business, develop financial management skills and create a business plan specifically for their operation. Participants are also paired with an FCV loan officer who will serve as a mentor throughout the duration of the program. There are two in-person meetings associated with this course – one at the beginning of the course and the second at the program’s graduation.
Kyley Clevenger, director of industry relations and government affairs, said, “A business plan is a road map for any farm or business, regardless of size or commodity. The AgBiz Planner Program provides participants with the opportunity to gain knowledge and enhance their business skillset, develop a ‘road map’ for their operation and network with their peers. The AgBiz Planner program is a highlight for our Association each and every year.”
