Regional Food Preservation Conference is coming to Wytheville (copy)
Staff Report
Hosted by Virginia Cooperative Extension, the first Food Preservation Conference is coming to Wytheville on Aug. 1.
Andrea Haubner, this region’s Area Specialized Agent - Community Health, said the day-long event “will be a very unique event with instructors from all over Southwest Virginia. In addition to over 15 unique sessions, there is an Appalachian storyteller coming during the lunch hour; pressure canner testing, and childcare will be provided all day by our very talented 4-H Extension Agents.”
Workshops include canning meats and broth, cooking with canned goods, dehydration, ham curing, fermentation, field dressing deer, freezing meals, jam and jelly making, molasses making, pressure canning, sauerkraut making, smoking meat, and water bath canning among others.
Haubner said, “Food preservation methods such as canning, fermentation, dehydration and freezing are great ways to preserve our food so that they last throughout the year.” However, she urged people to attend the conference to ensure that they’re doing so safely.
She also noted that Red Hill General Store of Hillsville will be set up at the conference.
The cost is $60 per adult and $30 per youth (ages 8-18). Lunch is included.
