The base of the Mathew F. Maury statue. On the pedestal a figure of the world, was later placed, showing the oceans which Maury's discoveries made possible to chart.
In May 1965, traffic at the Maury statue on Monument Avenue in Richmond was channeled by temporary lane markers. The city Traffic Engineering Department was testing if more restrictive lanes would reduce the chances of vehicles colliding during turns or hitting pedestrians.

The Matthew Fontaine Maury monument on Monument Ave. in Richmond, VA Friday, June 5, 2020, a day after Virginia Governor Ralph Northam authorized the removal of the state-owned statue of Robert E. Lee from Monument Ave. and approves of Richmond Mayor Levar Stoney's plan to remove all other monuments to Confederates along the historic avenue.
