Edwards to lead RHS football team into new season
Jim Talbert
Noal “Bubba" Edwards has been described as a “football lifer."
An all-state lineman for James Colley at Haysi, Edwards later played on the offensive line at UVA Wise. He started his coaching career at Haysi before heading to northern Virginia where he served stints as offensive coordinator at South Lakes and CD Hylton before coming back to Dickenson County as offensive coordinator at Ridgeview for three years.
He served two years as head coach at Castlewood, going 1-9 each year at one of the smallest schools in the state.
"I was grateful for the opportunity at Castlewood. It was hard, but I was thankful for how things went. We were trying to keep the program alive and make it grow," Edwards told the Bristol Herald Courier in a 2024 interview.
He joined a Richlands program that was coming off an 0-10 season and served as offensive coordinator on the 2024 team that improved to 2-8.Â
“People around Southwest Virginia know what I do on offense. We will be a true spread team. That means getting the ball to players in space, using the entire field, and spreading out the defense," he said in the 2024 media day interview.
Edwards spent the 2025 season coaching the RHS golf team and had been tabbed for that role again before the school board declined to offer Ronnie Davis another contract at its June 8 meeting.
While coaching contracts end with the close of a season and are renewed prior to the start of the next one, Davis had already put his staff together, started off season drills and seven on seven competitions.
The Blue Tornado is scheduled to open the 2026 season Aug. 21 with a trip to Virginia High.    Â
