Richlands takes district wrestling crown
Placing a record 11 wrestlers in the finals, Richlands rolled to the Southwest District wrestling title on Feb. 5.
The Blues finished the night with five individual titles and 157 pound winner Andrew Boyd shared wrestler of the year honors with Lebanon’s Ian Ray.
Ray, who has been wrestling since second grade, capped the night with a first round win by pin for his 151st win in four years of high school wrestling.
Tornado Coach Jon Brown claimed coach of the year honors.
Brayden McCracken (106-pound weight class), Ty Jones (138), Brennon Hess (144), Andrew Boyd (157) and Trevor Dupree (285) all won their finals matches via pinfall.
Marion claimed four individual titles and finished second in the team competition. Max Golliher (132), Garrett Moore (175), Devon Cantu (190) and Colden Greer (215) stood atop the podium for the Scarlet Hurricanes.
Richlands had 201 ½ points with Marion (173) and Graham (93) following on the leaderboard.
Blues head coach Jon Brown also had six grapplers with runner-up finishes.
Virginia High and Lebanon had two first-place finishers apiece.
Marcus Coleman (113) and Kale Hess (120) got gold for VHS, while Grayson Brammer (126) and Ian Ray (165) did the same for Lebanon.
Graham’s Leland Altizer won the 150-pound crown. Dalton Robinson, who got his 100th career win in the semifinals had a runner-up finish at 175.
The G-Men got third place finishes from Logan Lambert at 106, Brennen Havens at 157, and Kayden Hunsucker in the 190-pound class. Tazewell had four wrestlers bring home third place medals.
Tyler Farmer in the 120-pound class, Devon Young at 132, Jayson Hancock at 144 and Zane Settle in the 285-pound class all finished third. All the wrestlers advance to the Region 2D tournament
