County opens new year with balanced budget
Jim Talbert
What a difference a week makes!
Tazewell County Supervisors approved the budget for fiscal 2027 at its June 25 meeting and none of the cuts discussed at the June 16 work session were needed. The state budget was approved earlier in the week and included an additional $2 million for the school system.
The board also learned the status of several grants and made budget adjustments based on that information. The beach, cabins and other improvements planned for Cavitt’s Creek were restored to the budget.
The board also restored $25,000 to the dilapidated structures program and added $5,000 to offset a deficit in the law library program. They learned that Amonate Always has applied for a $50,000 grant to assist with developing a community center.
The budget contains flow through grants for the sheriff’s office of $115,000 from ICE and $60,000 for office equipment. Board members thanked Delegate Will Morefield and Senator Travis Hackworth for their efforts to get additional money for the county.
After approving the recommended changes, the board voted unanimously to approve the budget which contained no tax increases. They voted to allow the school board to keep its carryover funds.
They sequestered the school facilities fund and fund the school system categorically. The new budget, which is balanced will take effect July 1.
