Tazewell Va. – The preliminary events are over and the Tazewell County Fair goes to full speed Aug. 5.
 The fair traditionally opens with beauty pageants, car show, rodeo and other events before the carnival rolls in and things get rolling. R&D Amusements set up on the grounds Aug. 5 and is offering carnival rides the remainder of the week. This year’s fair features music every night along with motor sports and agriculture exhibits.
Gates will open at three pm Aug. 5-7 and close at 10:30 pm, and open nine am Aug. 8. Â Admission to the grounds will be $2 per person Aug.5-6 and $10 per person Aug. 7-8.
Gospel night is Aug. 6 featuring Michael Combs, Servant’s Heart, Eddy Street and Jeff and Sherri Easter. The Heritage area will have antique tractors and farm equipment on display all week.
Whether your taste runs to gospel, country, rock or bluegrass it will be available at various times on one of the six stages set up during the fair. Â Lee Dean, whose music pays tribute to Elvis and Johnny Cash, will be performing Aug. 5.
Other musical acts include Bluestone, Justin Baldwin and Robby Lester. Demolition derby fans will have two nights of action. Aug. 7 will be figure eight derby night with classes for cars and trucks and a powder puff event for the ladies.
The stock car derby takes over the arena Aug. 8. There will be cash prizes for the top three finishers in each of the derby classes.

Tazewell Va. – Tazewell County’s Historical Society is getting a financial boost from the town.
Dr. Terry Mullins outlined the history of the group and the building it occupies at the eastern end of Main Street during the July 14 council meeting. Mullins said the building is used by attorneys, genealogists, the libraries, scouts, students and individuals doing research.
He said the society has internet connections allowing research to be done online and has a camera that allows a view of Main Street 24 hours a day.Â
“We have people that look at the camera from everywhere. If it is down for any length of town we get questions," he said.
He said the Historical Society survives on donations and selling books and other items, with expenses totaling about $9,000 for the past year.
The town agreed to increase its budgeted amount from $2,000 to $6,000 and asked them to request support from the other towns and the county. They also agreed to write a letter of support for the society that the group can use in fund raising.
In other action council:
*Received a request for a letter of support from Ken Asbury and Rob Chandler of Iron Thrones motorcycle repair shop which would relocate to the former Arrow Upholstery shop. Iron Thrones is currently on property near the former Ramey Ford lot. They are seeking state grant funds to rehabilitate the building.Â
*Approved a donation of $700 to the THS marching band.
*Received an update on Tazewell Today’s activities from Nate Thomas.
*Received an update on the Comprehensive plan from Councilman Zach Cline.
*Discussed a list of projects on the town’s capital improvements plan. Council member Zach Cline proposed adding a capital improvements plan funding category to the town’s budget.
*Adopted the changes to the state criminal and vehicle code that took effect July 1.
*Received an update on the route 460 waterline replacement project.
*Received an update on the paving work in town.
Three people have been arrested in connection with a series of vehicle break ins in the town of Richlands.
A press release from the Richlands Police Department said the department responded to and investigated several vehicle break-ins that occurred throughout the Town In the early morning hours of July 28.
As a result of the investigation, Jamie D. Stump, Jeremy W. Wells, and Trystan L. Evans, all of Richlands, were arrested. They were each charged with petit larceny and entering a vehicle to commit a crime.
Both charges are class one misdemeanors and carry up to 12 months in jail and or a fine of up to $2,500.
Trystan Evans was booked and released on his own recognizance, scheduled for trial in general district court Aug. 10 at 1 p.m.
