Marion Senior High School placed a pair of wrestlers in the VHSL Class 2 state finals on Saturday in Salem.
The Hurricanes, led by 106-pounder Caden Hash and 132-pounder Max Golliher, finished in 10th place with 60 team points. Poquoson cruised to the team title by compiling 244 points.
Hash, who hit the 100-win mark during the state tournament, fell in the finals as Poquoson’s Jack Yetzer picked up the pin at 2:32.
Golliher also fell to a Poquoson wrestler, losing in the finals by pin to Jared Goodson at 1:45.
Garrett Moore, Marion’s 175-pounder, lost a heart-breaker in overtime, 7-4, to Patrick Collins, settling for fourth place.
In the Class 1 matchups, Rural Retreat unseated Grundy as team champ with a score of 216 to the Golden Wave’s 192.5. Many of the finals featured one of those two teams. The 150-pound division was no different, with Grundy’s Reid Stiltner taking a pin from Northwood’s Dominic Haynes.
Chilhowie placed two grapplers in third. At 144 pounds, freshman Dylan Martin swiped a 12-5 decision from Northampton’s Andrew Daggins. Colton Hamm of Chilhowie pinned Aaron Arnold of Thomas Walker in the first period to take third at 190 pounds.
Chilhowie’s Tyler Gonzalez took sixth after losing his final match by pinfall at 175 pound to King and Queen Central’s Chase Shelley.
Patrick Henry 132-pounder Bishop Ratliff finished sixth, losing the fifth-place match by pinfall to Braylan Rose of Eastside.
Chilhowie walked away with 51.5 team points. Northwood finished with 18 team points, and Patrick Henry with 13.
