For decades, a Chilhowie businessman has repeatedly taken steps to help Smyth County schools. Last Monday, the School Board and the Virginia School Boards Association honored Tom Bishop.
Superintendent Dr. Brad Haga said that Bishop’s ongoing partnership with local schools has helped students and educators succeed. Bishop, the owner of Berry Home Centers, has contributed resources and time to the Chilhowie schools and the entire system, Haga said.
The School Board nominated Bishop’s name to the VSBA for inclusion on its “Business Honor Roll in recognition of your outstanding support for your local schools and the public school students in your community. Your continued partnership and dedication play an important role in helping our schools thrive and in ensuring that every student has access to meaningful opportunities for success.”
A letter from the VSBA to Bishop said, “Your involvement strengthens the connection between schools, families, and the broader community, and it serves as an example of the powerful impact that local businesses, organizations, and non-profits can have on public education.
Bishop and his wife, Kyra, accepted the award.
Bishop is the grandson of Berry’s founder, F.W. Berry. The business has operations in Chilhowie and Abingdon.
Smyth receives funding for Hurricane Helene damaged roads
Staff Report
Smyth County will receive nearly $1.4 million for road infrastructure impacted by Hurricane Helene.
On Friday, Rep. Morgan Griffith announced that the U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) has awarded several grants to the Commonwealth of Virginia. The funding breakdown of the grants is as follows:
- $1,369,318 to Smyth County;
- $745,319 to Washington County; and
- $728,017 Grayson County.
According to the news release, these FEMA grants support repairment projects for local roads, road armoring, base, surfaces, culverts, road embankments, gabion stone, rip rap, shoulders and asphalt.
In response to these grant notices, U.S. Congressman Morgan Griffith (R-VA) said, “Hurricane Helene destruction to Southwest Virginia road infrastructure created severe driving hazards, limited access and worsened road conditions for local communities. These FEMA grants for more than $2.8 million help local authorities improve road conditions in Grayson, Smyth and Washington counties.”
