HIGH SCHOOL BASKETBALL: Patrick Henry boys clinch Hogo title, Chilhowie girls win (copy)
CHILHOWIE, Va. – As a student at Patrick Henry from 2008-2012, current PH head basketball coach Fred Selfe often stared at the banners hanging in the rafters of the school gym.
“The only banner that was blank was for boys basketball,” Selfe said. “PH did win the Southwest District in 1986, but that had never been added.”
Patrick Henry clinched its second straight Hogoheegee District crown on Thursday with a 71-45 victory at rival Chilhowie.
Many PH fans stuck around after the game for team photos.
“When I took over this job seven years ago, I just wanted our program to be respected,” Selfe said. “I could never have imagined going 20-0 in the district over two seasons. That’s an unreal accomplishment.”
As usual, there was an overflow crowd inside Chilhowie’s “Hot Box” on Thursday.
Behind the work of senior Cade Caywood, the Rebels (18-3) ended the suspense early by crafting leads of 36-13 and 45-16.
We’ve had this game circled for weeks,” Selfe said. “Chilhowie has a great program and there is a lot of tradition in this gym. To play this well in such a big game was fun.”
The six-foot-four and 235-pound Caywood delivered 26 points and four assists as the Rebels posted a 61-47 victory over Chilhowie on Jan. 13 at PH.
Despite facing double coverage, Caywood delivered 33 points and nine rebounds on Thursday. He collected 20 of those points in the first half.
“We love this kind of environment, and I think it leads to our best games,” Caywood said.
Caywood has a variety of shots, moves and fakes. Along with a one-handed slam dunk in transition, Caywood displayed a varied arsenal on Thursday
What sort of offensive strategy does Caywood prefer?
“Just anything that involves the ball in my hands and where I can see the floor,” Caywood said. “Most of my scoring is coming around the rim. I’m working to get the ball to my teammates more when I’m covered.”
Junior guard Jeb Stewart collected 21 points for PH, while senior forward Aidan Monahan added 13 rebounds.
“Patrick Henry really took it to us,” Chilhowie coach Matt Snodgrass said. “They went straight inside on offense to Caywood and Stewart and didn’t settle for a bunch of jump shots.”
Chilhowie junior point guard Jayden Schwartz connected on six 3-pointers and scored 19 points in the earlier district game against PH. Schwartz was held to eight points on Thursday against the halfcourt trap favored by PH.
“We thought we had a decent plan, but it’s tough when the other team can outweigh and outpower you,” Snodgrass said. “Caywood is very strong. We struggled to do anything with him and to score enough to keep up.”
Senior forward Hudson Sturgill led the Warriors with 10 points.
Chilhowie (13-9) has just two district losses and will close the regular season at Rural Retreat on Friday.
“Patrick Henry is ranked number one in the state for a reason,” Snodgrass said. “We’re just trying to do what we can to make a postseason run.”
PH advanced to the VHSL Class 1 state semifinals last year after winning the Region 1D title for the first time.
“This win was nice, but we have to keep moving ” Caywood said.
Selfe is eager to author more school history.
“The past two years have been special for our program, school and community,” Selfe said. “This was a goal for myself and my assistants.”

The good times continue for first-year Chilhowie head coach Andy Blevins.
Behind an 11-point effort from Kylee Dancy on Thursday, the Warriors improved to 17-5 overall.
Chilhowie recorded an 8-17 mark in 2024-25.
“This was our last home game of the season. And for our four seniors, it meant something extra,” Blevins said. “They deserved to go out strong because they have brought this program back to a new level and they have a special place in my heart.”
Senior Madi Preston added nine points for Chilhowie. Preston helped guide the Warriors to the Region 1D/2D swimming title on Wednesday.
Behind full court pressure on defense and balance on offense, the Warriors built a 12-3 lead entering the second quarter and took a 39-10 advantage into halftime.
Andie Boone topped PH in scoring with 10.
The game was halted for around 10 minutes at the 5:05 of the opening quarter due to the injury of a PH player.
The Rebels simply had no answer for the inspired Warriors.
“We dominated on defense and played efficient on offense,” Blevins said. “I was really proud for the effort. We defended our home court and just played fantastic.”
