Outlook: The Chilhowie Warriors are favored to defend their Hogoheegee District title this season and a major reason why is because of the way they defend.
Chilhowie posted three shutouts and allowed just 9.3 points per game a year ago in winning the program’s first district title since 2018 and advancing to the second round of the VHSL playoffs.
Ten starters return on that defensive unit as the Warriors could be even better than last year.
Middle linebacker Gavin Walker (6-foot-2, 225-pounds) was the Hogoheegee defensive player of the year last season after racking up 85 ½ tackles, 16 of which occurred behind the line of scrimmage.
Defensive end Preston Gollehon (eight tackles for loss), defensive tackle Isaiah Blevins, defensive tackle Anthony Canales, linebacker Tyler Gonzalez (52 ½ tackles, four interceptions), linebacker Gunnar Milhorne (41 ½ tackles), safety Garrett Dickison (61 ½ tackles, two interceptions), safety Dylan Martin (45 ½ tackles, five interceptions), cornerback Gabe Rouse and cornerback Luke Mullinax (38 tackles) started last season.
Defensive end Camden Ward is in the starting lineup for the first time. He got lots of playing time last season, racking up four tackles for loss when he was on the field
Caden Schools, Jesse Ruoff, Santiago Mendoza, Mason West, Bryce Robinson, Rylee Greer and Chance Hall provide more depth at various positions on defense.
Offensively, Gunnar Milhorne (1,226 rushing yards, 19 touchdowns), Martin (78 catches, 763 yards, five touchdowns), Rouse (16 catches, 154 yards), Mullinax (32 catches, 333 yards), Dickison (seven catches, 181 yards), Mason West and Walker at tight end are weapons.
Bryce Robinson started four games at quarterback last season when senior Asher Chapman was injured, winning each of them as he passed for 850 yards and eight TDs.
Left guard Antony Canales (6-0, 230) and left tackle Preston Gollehon (6-4, 250) are the only returning starters on the offensive line. Senior Elias Hall, freshman Jayden Thomas and senior Santiago Mendoza move into starting roles in helping pave the way for Milhorne and providing protection for Robinson.

Outlook: Those freshmen phenoms are now sophomore sensations for Honaker as the youngsters look to help the Tigers improve on last season’s superb showing.
Parker Lowe was the niftiest of those ninth graders as he was selected as the 2025 Hogoheegee District and Region 1D offensive player of the year after passing for 3,275 yards with 44 touchdowns and a mere five interceptions as the pilot of the team’s Air Raid offense.
Wide receivers Tyler Hubbard (58 receptions, 838 yards, 13 TDs), Kameron Keen and Jeremiah Rose were also pivotal to the potent passing attack last fall as freshmen.
Safety Brayden Justus and a quartet of offensive linemen in Keaton Stilwell, Hayden Robinson, Haiden Miller and Peyton Duty are other sophomores who gained valuable varsity time as well.
Honaker started 0-3 a season ago before finishing strong.
The Tigers also gained a lot of yards, averaging 32.9 points per game.
Levi Honaker (40 catches, 545 yards, 11 touchdowns) and Kam Beavers were part of that elite group of grab as well.
Cole Morrison (633 rushing yards), Malachi Gilbert and Keaton Smith will carry the ball when the Tigers unleash their ground attack.
The offensive line – which allowed Parker Lowe to get sacked just five times last season – must replace three starters.
While Honaker piled up the points, the Tigers surrendered a bunch as opponents averaged 32.9 points per game against them. Improving on D was a point of emphasis in the preseason.
Jeremiah Rose, Kameron Keen, Justus and Gilbert hold down the secondary. Johnson, Hubbard and Levi Honaker are the linebackers. Morrison, Smith, Miller and senior Hunter Vance (6-foot, 265-pounds) are on the D-Line.
Coach’s Quote: “There are not a lot of freshmen that get the experience that our freshmen got last year – and they were successful. It took ‘em a little bit early on to figure it out and we had to make some adjustments to get people in right places, but they had a big year and gained a ton of experience.”

Outlook: Rural Retreat was picked to win the Hogoheegee District in last year’s preseason coaches poll but injuries, inconsistency and some gut-wrenching losses – regular-season defeats to playoff qualifiers Eastside, George Wythe and Honaker occurred by a combined eight points – spoiled those high hopes.
Talented players like Chaz Penwright (now playing at Averett University), Trever Shelton, Jay Snavely, Easton Burkentine, Eli Poole, Justin Walker, Caleb Gibson, Hunter Rollyson and Scottie Campbell are gone and that means a lot of unknowns surround the Indians entering the 2026 season.
Quinton Hensley likes the players he has at the skill positions as Brody Allen played well after stepping in at quarterback for an injured Penwright last season. He threw for 624 yards and five touchdowns, while rushing for 246 yards and three scores.
Jake Rollyson (366 rushing yards, 362 receiving yards) can play a number of different positions and is a threat to reach the end zone each time he touches the ball. Eli Atwell, Caleb Johnson, Houston Bear, Gavin Watkins, Dawson Williams, Luke Houseman, Warren Robinson, Tanner Robinson and Peyton Newberry are all options in the passing game.
Depth on the offensive line is a concern, so returnees Gage Baker (6-foot-1, 295-pounds), Mason Fields (6-0, 185) and Griffin Ketner (6-1, 215) will be relied on heavily. Jameson Tibbs, Ian Bear, Jake Reardon and Dominic Lees are other key members of the O-Line.
Most of the same guys will play on the defensive side of the ball with freshmen Maddox Owens, Tamron Grimes and Bryar Hounshell showing plenty of potential.

Outlook: A four-year mainstay, a quarterback with a strong arm and a plethora of varsity veterans will likely mean improvement for the Patrick Henry Rebels after struggling last season and missing the playoffs for the first time since 2013.
It’s the final ride for Patrick Henry running back Jeb Stewart, who gained more than 1,500 yards on the ground last season and is also a force at linebacker.
The most notable addition to the roster is senior Kolby Hicks, who is playing football for the first time since he was a freshman. He was the ace pitcher on PH’s baseball squad that won the VHSL Class 1 state title back in June and can fling the pigskin.
There are plenty of options on offense with wide receiver Kallum Gobble, wingback Jordan Stewart, tight end Hunter White, Dallas Harner, Gaven Stanley and hard-charging fullback Colton Frye serving as playmakers. Last season’s starting QB, Zayne Bolen, is also in the mix.
However, the big question is can the Rebels be better up front?
Seniors Ben Cuddy and Carter Jenkins are the anchors of the offensive line with guys like Bryson Forrester, Ryder Thayer, Kolton Hutton and Eli Ellis needing to step up.
Senior linebacker Colton Frye, senior defensive back Gaven Stanley and versatile junior Jordan Stewart are the tone-setters for Patrick Henry’s defense.
Frye is a tenacious tackler who made more than 100 stops a season ago.
Stanley snagged five interceptions, while Stewart – Jeb’s younger brother – had a breakout season.
Coach’s Quote: “I feel like we’ve worked hard this summer and we’re a much-improved team from last year. We’ve just got to figure out if your younger guys up front are going to gel quickly enough to get some wins. … We were in a lot of different ballgames last year and lost two by one score, but I think it’s going to help us this year because all those kids are back and know what it takes to win a game.”

Outlook: The smallest school in Region 1D according to the VHSL’s latest ADM numbers (Average Daily Membership in grades 9-11), Northwood hopes to do big things on the gridiron in 2026.
The Panthers are coming off a season in which they posted their first winning season and advanced to the playoffs for the first time since 2015.
Optimism abounds in Saltville with eight starters returning on offense and nine back on defense.
The leader for the Panthers is 6-foot-5, 225-pound running back/linebacker Brody Waddle. He rushed for 1,449 yards on 208 carries with 17 touchdowns last year.
Waddle also caught five passes for 72 yards, made 103 tackles, intercepted a pass and recovered two fumbles – one of which he returned for a touchdown.
Northwood has other offensive weapons as well.
Dawson Prater moves to the quarterback position with Brett Garner, Skylar Boardwine and fullback Randy Kestner also getting carries. Boardwine rushed for two touchdowns in a win over Marion in a VHSL Benefit Game.
Duke Colley and Dominick Haynes have shown they can catch the ball.
Dawson Prater provides another dimension as he’s a talented kicker.
James Belcher (6-1, 265, sr.) anchors the offensive line with Tyler Gillespie, Brayden Havens and Brady Sanders helping pave the way for Waddle, Garner and company.
The Panthers made their biggest improvement on defense last season with guys like linebacker Dominick Haynes and defensive back Brett Garner collecting plenty of tackles.
Many of the same names mentioned as offensive catalysts will contribute in a major way on defense. Sophomore linemen Skyler Griffey emerged as a standout on the defensive unit a season ago.
Coach’s Quote: “They want to win. They know what it feels like now and they want to continue doing that. … There’s excitement going on not just in the players, but in the community. The drive is there. I’m eager to get going and see what they can do.”

Outlook: The roster hasn’t had much quantity, but the Holston Cavaliers put a quality product on the field each season.
The dudes from Damascus have made the playoffs in four of the five seasons since Chris Akers took over as head coach and the Bluefield native seems to always get the most out of his squad.
The Cavs went 6-5 last year and made the Region 1D playoff field but ended the season on a three-game losing streak. Improving their physicality was a emphasis in the offseason.
Holston numbers 28 strong this year with plenty of proven players in that group.
While the losses of two-way lineman Jo’Lon Norman, German foreign-exchange student Ben Wuerz and running back Collin Widener will be felt immensely, Holston still has its top rusher, its quarterback and most of the offensive line back.
Senior Eli Tweed is one of the top running backs in Region 1D as he rushed for 1,622 yards last season. The dude made a seamless transition from wide receiver to running back and has speed to burn.
Quarterback Brodie Richardson is another varsity veteran, while Desmond Mickens is a threat as a slot receiver, tailback and kick returner.
Levi Parks (5-9, 165) Colt Thomas (5-5, 215), Cody Cordle (5-10, 255), Brandon Pennington (5-10, 250) and tight end Brady Owens (6-1, 220 provide the blocking up front.
Parks did not have a single bad snap from the center position in 2025.
The biggest question mark comes on the other side of the ball.
“We have to figure out a way to be better on defense this year,” Akers said.
Inside linebackers Brady Owens and Levi Parks lead the way for that unit, while Richardson and Liam Maness will help hold down the secondary.
Those aforementioned standouts on offense will contribute to the defensive unit as usual since the team doesn’t have much depth.
Holston opened its season on Friday, hanging tough before succumbing in a 22-6 loss at Southern Gap.
Coach’s Quote: “A majority of our starters are coming back on both sides of the ball. We’ve got to figure out how to plug those spots of the guys who left. We feel pretty good about what we’ve got as long as we can stay healthy.”

Outlook: Continuity has been key for George Wythe.
Brandon Harner – the winningest coach in program history – has been at the helm of the Maroons for 13 seasons. That is the longest current continuous tenure at one school for a gridiron boss in far Southwest Virginia.
The Maroons have not had a sub.-500 record since 1996 and have made the playoffs every season since 2007.
GW got better as the season progressed last fall in earning a share of the Mountain Empire District crown and finishing as Region 1C runner-up.
The roster features just six seniors and there were some heavy graduation losses – Region 1C defensive player of the year Camden Skeens being the most notable – but the Maroons usually just reload.
They have one of the area’s most versatile and underrated players in Cade Bralley, who can make an impact at a variety of different positions on offense. Defensively, the linebacker rang up 125 solo tackles a season ago and he is a special player on special teams as he averaged 43.7 yards on 24 punts.
Quarterback Isaac Smith returns as does running back Caden Golliher.
Harner felt in the preseason his offensive and defensive lines would be a strength. Cody Sisk (6-foot-2, 230-pounds), Kavion Brown (5-11, 275), Mason Kennedy (6-1, 225) and Jaxson Moore (6-0, 205, soph.) are outstanding linemen on both sides of the ball.
