Meet Eulalie, Smyth Animal Rescue’s Pet of the Week.
This sweet girl is a 5-year-old, 35-pound cattle dog mix who may be past the puppy-stage zoomies but still has plenty of adventurous spirit left in her! Whether she’s exploring the great outdoors, taking a leisurely stroll or embarking on the greatest adventure of all- finding her forever home- Eulalie is ready for the journey!
Eulalie is new to Smyth Animal Rescue so she’s still finding her footing and building her confidence in this big, exciting world. But she has already made quite the impression! With her bright eyes and sweet, gentle demeanor, she has completely won over the hearts of our volunteers and staff!
Eulalie’s adoption fee has been sponsored! So all you need to take her home is an approved application and the willingness to welcome her into your home.
Eulalie is: spayed, microchipped, and up to date on age-appropriate vaccinations.
Library of Virginia to celebrate Virginia Archives Month with online webinars
The Library of Virginia will celebrate Virginia Archives Month this October with tours, archivist talks and other events to raise awareness of the importance of preserving and sharing cultural and historical documents. This year’s theme, “Remember Me: Death and Memorial in the Archives,” celebrates the memorials in collections, whether that be cemetery registers, photographs, rolls of honor, funeral programs or even the buildings that house the archives.
Virginia Archives Month is part of the national observance of American Archives Month in October where archival institutions across the Commonwealth and nation celebrate archivists, showcase archival collections and highlight the importance of preserving and sharing historical records. Archives are unique assets that allow society to tell its story, hold governments accountable and safeguard the rights of its citizens.
The Library of Virginia’s Archives Month activities will include a number of online webinars.
They will include:
• Ghosts in the Archives | Thursday, Oct. 15, at 6 p.m.
Alena Pirok, author and assistant professor of history at the State University of New York at Cortland, will discuss the relationship between archives, history and ghost stories. Register at https://lva-virginia.libcal.com/event/17274807.
• The Business of Death | Wednesday, Oct. 21, at 7 p.m.
The Library will host a panel discussion about the history of death industries, featuring Andréa Livi Smith, Ph.D., professor of historic preservation at the University of Mary Washington; Kelly M. Brennan, Ph.D., senior historian for Colonial Williamsburg; and Paige Newman, manager of library cataloging and curator of library collections at the Virginia Museum of History & Culture. • Adapt or Die | Thursday, Oct. 27, at 12 p.m.

Virginia Tax system to undergo upgrade
Virginia Tax will begin a major upgrade of its online systems and services over Labor Day weekend. To prepare for the transition, the online filing and payment applications will be temporarily unavailable starting Saturday, Sept. 5. Services will be restored on Tuesday, Sept. 8, at 7 a.m.
Taxpayers who plan to use the online filing and payment services during Labor Day weekend should complete all transactions before Sept. 5.
Beginning Saturday, Sept. 5, at 12:01a.m., all tax services will be unavailable, including:
• Tax payments and payment processing;
• Filing returns;
• Checking refund status.
If taxpayers have a payment already scheduled over Labor Day weekend, it will be considered timely based on the scheduled payment date.
What to expect after the upgrade
Taxpayers will be able to resume normal business with the agency after Labor Day, on Tuesday, Sept. 8, at 7 a.m. At that time, businesses will also be able to experience the new, modernized Online Services platform.
This upgrade is a first step in a four-year process to modernize systems and online services. For more information, visit tax.virginia.gov/modernize.
Students urged to take part in ‘America Is…250!’ video contest
Students across the country have a chance to win cash awards and national recognition for their schools through WoodmenLife's "America Is… 250!" Video Contest. The contest is open now through Oct. 7 and encourages students in grades K-12 to submit an original 30- to 60-second video celebrating the 250th anniversary of this nation's independence and sharing what America means to them.
Winners will be selected in two divisions, K-8 and 9-12, with a grand prize of $2,500, second place of $1,500, and third place of $1,000 awarded in each division. WoodmenLife sponsors the contest each year.
The public will be invited to view and vote for their favorite entries on WoodmenLife’s Facebook page from Oct. 14 through Oct. 21. Grand prize winners will also receive a commemorative “America Is…” Video Contest award to be presented and displayed at their school. Winners will be announced Oct. 27 on Facebook.
The WoodmenLife “America Is…” video contest celebrates the spirit of the red, white, and blue through the eyes of America’s youth, while offering students the chance to win cash prizes and national recognition for their schools. Last year’s contest drew 51 entries and more than 21,000 votes from supporters nationwide.
“Since the contest launched in 2017, WoodmenLife has proudly awarded $60,000 to participating schools,” said Robby Molony, vice president, Fraternal, for WoodmenLife. "As our nation marks its 250th anniversary, we're excited to invite students to celebrate America's story through creative videos while competing for recognition and cash awards for their schools."
