Head-on crash takes lives of 2 Troutdale residents

A Friday crash on Sugar Grove Highway claimed the lives of two people.
According to the Virginia State Police, an investigation is underway into the fatal crash that occurred on July 3 at approximately 12:10 p.m. in Smyth County. Â
The VSP said that the preliminary investigation indicates a Nissan Pathfinder was heading northbound on Sugar Grove Highway near the Racoon Branch Campground when it crossed the centerline and struck a Dodge Ram head-on.
The driver of the Pathfinder, Sonya E. Baker, 50, of Troutdale, and the driver of the Ram, David S. Shore, 64, of Troutdale, both died at the scene.
The crash remains under investigation.
Also in Southwest Virginia, the VSP is investigating a fatal motorcycle crash that occurred July 2 at 4:15 p.m. on Interstate 81 northbound at Exit 94 in Pulaski County.
According to the agency, a 2022 Harley Davidson Street Glide was exiting I-81 at Exit 94 when it ran off the road and hit two signs. The motorcycle then overturned. The driver, Timothy O Cox, 67, of Dublin, died at the scene. Cox was wearing a helmet.
This crash also remains under investigation.
Solar Workgroup of Southwest Virginia to hold community meeting
On July 22, the Solar Workgroup of Southwest Virginia is hosting a community meeting in Tazewell County that will focus on options for residential solar power in the commonwealth. These options include rooftop solar, shared solar and plug-in solar for both homeowners and renters.
The meeting will be held from 6-7:30 p.m. at the Appalachian Arts Center, 112 River Road, Cedar Bluff. The event is free and will include dinner. Attendees will be registered for a door-prize drawing for a Solar Workgroup Solsquatch T-shirt. Those interested in attending are encouraged to register by July 17.
The Solar Workgroup is made up of nonprofit and community action organizations, colleges, state agencies, and residents and businesses interested in helping develop a renewable energy industry in the seven coalfield counties of Southwest Virginia.
