Fire claims life of elderly Marion man

A Monday evening fire claimed the life of an elderly man.
According to a Town of Marion news release, around 5:30 p.m., Marion Fire/EMS was dispatched to a structure fire on the 800 block of Cumberland Street in Marion.
Chief Richard Keesling said in the release that upon arrival firefighters found the house full of smoke and entered, searching for an elderly resident that was reported to still be in the home.Â
Firefighters found the individual, who was transported to Smyth County Community Hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries.Â
Firefighters extinguished the flames and ventilated the house. One firefighter was also treated and released from the hospital following the fire.Â
Units were assisted by several neighboring departments, Marion police officers and Smyth County Sheriff’s deputies.
