Some SWVA farmers may seek drought disaster relief
SPorter
Tazewell County has been designated as a primary natural disaster area due to the ongoing drought, according to Rep. Morgan Griffith. With that, the contiguous counties of Bland, Smyth, Buchanan, and Russell may also receive access to drought assistance.
The help is coming after the U.S. Department of Agriculture Secretary Brooke Rollins issued a Secretarial Disaster Declaration in June.
Wednesday, Griffith said, “This USDA action is necessary to support farmers in Virginia’s Ninth District. Spring frost and freeze events followed by severe drought continue to impact Virginia’s agricultural health.”
“This disaster designation sets in motion opportunities for eligible groups to request emergency loan assistance. My office is ready to help facilitate access to federal assistance. Additionally, I will continue to advocate for our farming communities as they navigate through growing season challenges and record temperatures.”
Local agricultural producers qualify for multiple federal assistance programs through the USDA Farm Service Agency (FSA).
The Abingdon Service Center for the FSA may be reached at 276-525-6679 or by emailing Stefanie Shields at stefanie.shields@usda.gov.
In Wytheville, a Rural Development Service Center may be reached at 276-484-9393 or by emailing Luke Garner at Luke.Garner@usda.gov.
