Museum announces new exhibit
Edith Bolling Wilson Birthplace Foundation is pleased to announce its annual First Lady Birthday Celebration, “Have Your Cake and Edith, Too,” on Saturday, Oct. 17, at the Bolling Wilson Hotel.
The evening will celebrate the life and legacy of First Lady Edith Bolling Wilson while raising critical funds to support the educational programs and continued preservation efforts of the Edith Bolling Wilson Birthplace Museum.
The festivities begin at 3 p.m. at the Edith Bolling Wilson Birthplace Museum located at 145 E. Main Street in Wytheville, with the dedication of the Cary C. Fuller Education Center, honoring Cary C. Fuller for his dedication to preserving the history and legacy of his great-aunt, First Lady Edith Bolling Wilson.
Following the dedication, guests are invited to experience the opening of the museum’s newest exhibit, “Touching History: Matilda Stepteau & the Slave Experience.” The exhibit shares the story of Matilda Stepteau, an African American woman whose life was intertwined with the Bolling family, while exploring the experiences of enslaved people and the complex transition to freedom. The exhibit opening will feature Benjamin Jackson as guest speaker.
The celebration continues at 6 p.m. at the Bolling Wilson Hotel with “Have Your Cake and, Edith, Too,” an evening of dinner, fellowship, and history featuring Betsy Ely portraying First Lady Edith Bolling Wilson. Through her portrayal, guests will have the opportunity to encounter Edith’s remarkable journey, “From Wytheville to the White House.”
“We are thrilled to bring our community together for a day that celebrates history, honors those who have helped preserve it, and supports our educational programming for generations to come,” said Richard Bullins, Executive Director of the Edith Bolling Wilson Birthplace Museum. “We are grateful for the support of our sponsors, donors, and friends, and we cannot wait to see the impact we will make together.”
Both events offer a unique opportunity to celebrate the museum’s accomplishments while looking ahead to its future. Reservations are limited, and early reservations are encouraged.
