01-20-1956: Richmond Public Library
02-21-1963 (cutline): Workmen are demolishing an old residence, used for offices in recent years, adjacent to the Richmond Public Library in the first step in long-range but indefinite plans for library expansion. Librarian Howard M. Smith said today no plans are being made to use the space for parking, pending a Council decision on the proposed Second St. parking facility. The City Planning Commission on March 3 will hold a public hearing on a proposal to include all of the library's block, with the exception of the Crozet House property, is the master plan for future library use.

"Why would the School Board enact such a vague and draconian policy?" asks columnist Michael Paul Williams.Â
"The children" are the last refuge of scoundrels. This campaign is not so much about protecting children than hiding inconvenient or uncomfortable truths. That requires the denigration of both intelligence and professionalism, which is why librarians and books are under attack. Â
This national right-wing censorship project seeks to de-emphasize empathy, tolerance and understanding. It attacks diversity and inclusion in both education and public policy. Its goal is to prevent anyone — even elementary school students — from consuming information that might nourish their critical thinking skills.
To observe the political environment in Virginia, you’d think folks are wildly dissatisfied with K-12 public education, teachers are roundly despised, and book banning and historical whitewashing enjoy widespread support.
