ABINGDON, Va. — For 25 years, the William King Museum of Art has offered contemporary regional art, fine world art and cultural heritage exhibits to all that visit the museum atop the hill on Academy Drive in Abingdon.
Center for Studio Art & Education, in the former Washington County administrative office building;
New visitor-friendly east museum entrance with improved parking, driveways and sidewalks.
Cultural Heritage Project:
New gallery for the Cultural Heritage permanent collection;
Online publication of Cultural Heritage Project Archive;
Digital humanities fellowship for students and scholars;
Artisan apprenticeships linked to Center for Studio Art & Education;
In-museum program for fourth-graders to learn about their cultural heritage.
Museum advancements:
Reaccreditation in 2018;
Upgrades to museum operations and increased capacity for exhibition management, environmental stability and art loans;
Financial sustainability through endowment building.
Education programs:
New Heritage Express program for fourth-graders using Cultural Heritage Collection as planning focus;
Expansion of VanGogh Outreach to both second- and third-grade students in all Southwest Virginia school districts and into Kentucky, West Virginia and Northeast Tennessee;
Workforce development programming for high school and college students with new digital art lab and craft apprenticeships.
