Beatrice "Bea" Sharp Johnson, age 84, of Wytheville, Virginia, passed away on Thursday, June 4, 2020. She was the daughter of the late Ranzie E. Sharp and Sally Slate Sharp. She was preceded in death by her husband, Willis P. "Petey" Johnson; and her brother, Roger L. Sharp. Bea was a member of St. Paul United Methodist Church. Bea was a loving and devoted wife who also deeply cherished friends and family. Bea is survived by her sister-in-law, Brenda Martin Sharp of Chadds Ford, Pa.; nieces, Ronda and Edmund Meyer of Mt. Pleasant, S.C., Rochelle and Michael O'Day of Pittsburgh, Pa.; nephews, Roger L. Betty Marie Wright Reece, age 85, of Wytheville, passed away on Friday June 5, 2020. She was born in Bristol, Tennessee on July 24, 1934, to the late Robert Kyle and Hazel Tolliver Wright. She attended Holston Valley High School, and formerly an employee at the Wilderness Road Truck Stop and a host at the Stoney Fork Campground with her husband. Betty was a member of the Wytheville Junior Women's Club, George Wythe Band Booster's, Wytheville Square Dance Club and the District #38 Wytheville Order of Eastern Star. She was preceded in death by her husband, Raymond B. "R.C." Reece. Survivors include four sons and daughters-in-law, Brad and Sherrie Reece of Thomasville, N.C., Jerry and T.J. Calvin Wade Jones, born June 14, 1962, passed away on Tuesday, June 2, 2020. Calvin was a gentle soul and longtime community member of Key Largo. Born in Newport News, Virginia, Calvin attended and graduated from LaSalle Military Academy of Long Island, New York. He is survived by his mother, Barbara Grinnell Scheu; his brothers, Casey Scheu and Ian Scheu; his son, Calvin "CJ" Jones Jr.; and three grandchildren, Darian (aged 10), Aiden (aged 9), Adrian (aged 3). Calvin has nieces and nephews from all of his siblings. He was preceded in death by his brothers, Kevin Dale Jones and Billy "Bo" Jones; and father, William Scheu. Calvin loved fishing and boating and the Keys life. He was a regular patron at Deny's on Key Largo and known well by its local patrons. All who knew Calvin understood what a kind and caring person he was; he will be sorely missed. May the choirs of angels receive him and bring him to Paradise. Denny Ray Lawson Denny Ray Lawson, age 72, of Raven, Va., passed away on Sunday, May 31, 2020, at his home surrounded by his family. He was born on June 7, 1947, in Richlands, Va., the son of the late Powell (Bay) and Clara Helbert Lawson. Denny was a retired coal miner and member of the UMWA. He loved to hunt and ginseng. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three brothers, Stevie Powell Lawson, Jimmy Kenneth Lawson, and Wayne Allen Lawson; and son-in-law, David Elswick. John Matthew Miller, age 48, of Wytheville, Va., passed away on June 4, 2020. John was born in New Jersey, on September 5, 1971, to the late James Louis Miller and Irene Violante Miller. John was the Superintendent of the Wytheville Golf Club, and he was a friend to all who knew him. John enjoyed watching and playing sports especially golf. Most of all John loved spending time with his friends. Survivors include John's mother, Irene Violante Miller of Madison, Wisconsin; and his brother, Jim Miller of New Jersey. Justus "Jud" Reynolds Jr., age 86, passed away on Saturday, May 30, 2020, following an extended illness. He was born on February 10, 1934, in Pa. He was a retired Major, having served 24 years with the U.S. Army and was a Vietnam and Korean War Veteran. Jud was a member of the Richlands Presbyterian Church. He enjoyed woodworking, golf, and painting. He was preceded in death by his parents, Justus and Dorothy Reynolds Sr.; two sisters, Kathleen "Kitty" Siebold and Dorothy "Doss" Simon; two infant brothers; and two sons, David Reynolds and Andrew "Andy" Reynolds. Survivors include his loving wife of 22 years, Narcie Mullins Reynolds; one daughter, Catherine Denine Smith; six grandchildren; one sister, Marilyn Claire White; and many nieces and nephews. Larry Dorn Waddell, 76, of Newport News, Virginia, passed away peacefully with his loved ones at his bedside after fighting a brave battle with cancer. He went to be with the Lord on May 29, 2020. Larry was born on July 6, 1943, in Wytheville, Virginia. Upon graduation from Ceres High School, he attended East Tennessee State where he received his Bachelor's Degree. He began his lifelong career in Fries, Virginia, before moving to Hampton. He earned his Master's Degree from Hampton Institute while teaching at Eaton Junior High School. He began the most rewarding 30 years of his career at Kecoughtan High School in 1972 where he worked as an athletic director, coach, and assistant principal. Larry's post-retirement career included administrative duties at Y.H. Thomas where he encouraged students to earn their GEDs and administered testing for the Hampton Sheriff's Department. He was also a member of Liberty Baptist Church in Hampton, Virginia. Born a mountain man with a gentleman's heart and a warrior's spirit, he lived a simple life and enjoyed simple things. Obstacles in his life were overcome through grit and determination. His character is attributed to the hometown that made and raised him. His heart never left the beautiful, yet simple life of this small town, Ceres, Virginia. Larry's devotion to God, family and education, was evident through his work ethic, discipline, and "down to earth" attitude that made him loved and adored by all. He is survived by the love of his life, Patricia Mizelle Waddell; his son, Brandon Dorn Waddell; and daughter, Jennifer Lockett (Terrence). He had three grandchildren, Jordan Lockett, Ryan Dorn Waddell, and Karyss Lockett. He is also survived by his sister, Brenda Tate (Hal) from Bland, Virginia, as well as many extended family members. MARION, Va. Margaret "Peggy" Bachtell Payne, age 92, passed away on Sunday, June 7, 2020, at Francis Marion Manor, Marion, Va. Peggy grew up on a dairy farm in Lexington, Va. and began a life of caring for others by making sure neighbors had enough to eat. That kind of life of compassion became an example for Peggy's daughters and grandchildren. Her life calling was to be a nurse she was a proud graduate of the UVA School of Nursing and a nurse for 40 years. Peggy was a loving wife, mother and Meme to her family and enjoyed time on the beach with them. Her gentle way will be missed; but her example and spirit of giving, service and devotion to others will be carried on and remembered forever. She was preceded in death by her husband of 36 years, Robert Goodwin Payne Jr.; parents, George Samuel "Boone" and Lula Wilmore Bachtell; siblings, Katie Elliot, Irene Scott, Linford Bachtell, Grace Pultz and Annie Bachtell. Martha Lee Williams Brown, age 87, of Wytheville, passed away Saturday, June 6, 2020, at her home surrounded by her family. She was born on January 9, 1933 to the late Ted and Lena Fisher Williams. Martha was preceded in death by her husband of 67 years, Carl Fred Brown; a sister, Francis Rennie; three brothers, June, Ralph and Jack Williams. Martha was a member of the First Christian Church for 69 years were she had a Deaconess Emeritus status. She is survived by her daughters, Kathy Brown of Bluefield, Va., Mary Ann Brown of Wytheville; sons and daughter-in-law, Freddie Brown of Wytheville, Mike and Vanessa Brown of Wytheville; two sisters and brothers-in-law, Carrol and Johnny Crabtree of Wytheville, Helen and Charles Jackson of Max Meadows; and several nieces and nephews also survive. Thomas Greenwood Wilson, 62, of Blacksburg, Va., died on Saturday, June 6, 2020. He was born on July 4, 1957 in Marion, Va. to James Franklin and Betty Lou Greenwood Wilson. He was preceded in death by parents. He is also survived by his sister, Diane Wilson Catley; and brother-in-law, Dennis Brian Catley; niece, Jessica Ina Catley; and nephew, Bryan Thomas Catley. Tom graduated from Marion Senior High School. He received a Bachelor's degree in Music Education from Concord University and a Master's degree in Educational Administration from Virginia Tech. After graduation from Concord he served as band director, music teacher, and assistant basketball coach with the Highland County, Va. public schools (1979-1981). After receiving his Master's degree he went to work for the Virginia Tech Upward Bound and Talent Search programs, serving as counselor, assistant director and was named director of the programs in 1998. He retired from Virginia Tech in 2012. In retirement, he worked for Blacksburg Transit, then worked for Virginia Tech Undergraduate Admissions until May 2020. Tom was passionate about educational opportunities for all students and worked through the programs to ensure that low-income and first-generation students in southwest and central Virginia had the opportunity to attend college. He was recognized as a leader at the state and national levels with the federal TRIO programs. He twice served as president of the Virginia Association of Educational Opportunity Program Personnel, served two two year terms on the executive board of the Mid-Eastern Association of Educational Opportunity Program Personnel, and in 2004, 2011 and 2012 was recipient of the Virginia Outstanding Service Award for service to the state and regional associations. Throughout the years he was a presenter, panel member, and moderator at state, regional, and national conferences. He served as choir director at Luther Memorial Lutheran Church from 1987 to 2019. He also was known in the area for playing drums with a variety of local bands. At Tech, Tom served on the Steering Committee for the Virginia Tech Commonwealth of Virginia Campaign. He served as faculty advisor for the Virginia Tech Alpha Sigma Phi Fraternity at its founding, a roll he maintained for over 10 years. He was an avid golfer and was an active fan of Virginia Tech and Concord University sports. A Golden Hokie, he was an active volunteer Hokie Representative and was a member of the Concord Mountain Lion Club. A memorial service celebrating Tom's life will be held at a later date at Luther Memorial Lutheran Church in Blacksburg, Va. Visitation with the family will follow the service in the church fellowship hall. All will be invited to attend and share memories. Larry's post-retirement career included administrative duties at Y.H. Thomas where he encouraged students to earn their GEDs and administered testing for the Hampton Sheriff's Department. He was also a member of Liberty Baptist Church in Hampton, Virginia. Born a mountain man with a gentleman's heart and a warrior's spirit, he lived a simple life and enjoyed simple things. Obstacles in his life were overcome through grit and determination. His character is attributed to the hometown that made and raised him. His heart never left the beautiful, yet simple life of this small town, Ceres, Virginia. Larry's devotion to God, family and education, was evident through his work ethic, discipline, and "down to earth" attitude that made him loved and adored by all. He is survived by the love of his life, Patricia Mizelle Waddell; his son, Brandon Dorn Waddell; and daughter, Jennifer Lockett (Terrence). He had three grandchildren, Jordan Lockett, Ryan Dorn Waddell, and Karyss Lockett. He is also survived by his sister, Brenda Tate (Hal) from Bland, Virginia, as well as many extended family members. MARION, Va. Margaret "Peggy" Bachtell Payne, age 92, passed away on Sunday, June 7, 2020, at Francis Marion Manor, Marion, Va. Peggy grew up on a dairy farm in Lexington, Va. and began a life of caring for others by making sure neighbors had enough to eat. That kind of life of compassion became an example for Peggy's daughters and grandchildren. Her life calling was to be a nurse she was a proud graduate of the UVA School of Nursing and a nurse for 40 years. Peggy was a loving wife, mother and Meme to her family and enjoyed time on the beach with them. Her gentle way will be missed; but her example and spirit of giving, service and devotion to others will be carried on and remembered forever. She was preceded in death by her husband of 36 years, Robert Goodwin Payne Jr.; parents, George Samuel "Boone" and Lula Wilmore Bachtell; siblings, Katie Elliot, Irene Scott, Linford Bachtell, Grace Pultz and Annie Bachtell. Peggy is survived by her daughters, Betty Schwartz and husband, Steve of Marion, Va., Barbi Fitz and husband, Bob of Glen Allen, Va., and Peggy Lee Payne of Lexington, Va.; four grandchildren, Kim Crewey and husband, Brian, Stevie Schwartz, Holly White and husband, Daniel, Ryan Fitz and wife, Colleen; four great-grandchildren, Eli and Caroline Crewey, and Dylan and Claire White. Martha Lee Williams Brown, age 87, of Wytheville, passed away Saturday, June 6, 2020, at her home surrounded by her family. She was born on January 9, 1933 to the late Ted and Lena Fisher Williams. Martha was preceded in death by her husband of 67 years, Carl Fred Brown; a sister, Francis Rennie; three brothers, June, Ralph and Jack Williams. Martha was a member of the First Christian Church for 69 years were she had a Deaconess Emeritus status. She is survived by her daughters, Kathy Brown of Bluefield, Va., Mary Ann Brown of Wytheville; sons and daughter-in-law, Freddie Brown of Wytheville, Mike and Vanessa Brown of Wytheville; two sisters and brothers-in-law, Carrol and Johnny Crabtree of Wytheville, Helen and Charles Jackson of Max Meadows; and several nieces and nephews also survive. The family would like to say a special thanks to Hospice of SWVA and special care givers, Glenda, Wilma, Cheryl, Beverly, Connie and Cindy. Thomas Greenwood Wilson, 62, of Blacksburg, Va., died on Saturday, June 6, 2020. He was born on July 4, 1957 in Marion, Va. to James Franklin and Betty Lou Greenwood Wilson. He was preceded in death by parents. He is also survived by his sister, Diane Wilson Catley; and brother-in-law, Dennis Brian Catley; niece, Jessica Ina Catley; and nephew, Bryan Thomas Catley. Tom graduated from Marion Senior High School. He received a Bachelor's degree in Music Education from Concord University and a Master's degree in Educational Administration from Virginia Tech. After graduation from Concord he served as band director, music teacher, and assistant basketball coach with the Highland County, Va. public schools (1979-1981). After receiving his Master's degree he went to work for the Virginia Tech Upward Bound and Talent Search programs, serving as counselor, assistant director and was named director of the programs in 1998. He retired from Virginia Tech in 2012. In retirement, he worked for Blacksburg Transit, then worked for Virginia Tech Undergraduate Admissions until May 2020. Tom was passionate about educational opportunities for all students and worked through the programs to ensure that low-income and first-generation students in southwest and central Virginia had the opportunity to attend college. He was recognized as a leader at the state and national levels with the federal TRIO programs. He twice served as president of the Virginia Association of Educational Opportunity Program Personnel, served two two year terms on the executive board of the Mid-Eastern Association of Educational Opportunity Program Personnel, and in 2004, 2011 and 2012 was recipient of the Virginia Outstanding Service Award for service to the state and regional associations. Throughout the years he was a presenter, panel member, and moderator at state, regional, and national conferences. He served as choir director at Luther Memorial Lutheran Church from 1987 to 2019. He also was known in the area for playing drums with a variety of local bands. At Tech, Tom served on the Steering Committee for the Virginia Tech Commonwealth of Virginia Campaign. He served as faculty advisor for the Virginia Tech Alpha Sigma Phi Fraternity at its founding, a roll he maintained for over 10 years. He was an avid golfer and was an active fan of Virginia Tech and Concord University sports. A Golden Hokie, he was an active volunteer Hokie Representative and was a member of the Concord Mountain Lion Club. A memorial service celebrating Tom's life will be held at a later date at Luther Memorial Lutheran Church in Blacksburg, Va. Visitation with the family will follow the service in the church fellowship hall. All will be invited to attend and share memories.
