Orange County is aware of concerns about summer child care programming at Orange Elementary School (OES) and Lightfoot Elementary School (LES). We know reliable child care is essential for working families.
We want to be clear that Orange County has not shut down the summer child care program. The program continues to operate in county school facilities through Right at School, the private provider now operating the program.
What changed this summer is that enrollment at OES and LES was very low, with 15 families enrolled across both schools. Because of low enrollment, Right at School determined that operating four separate sites this summer was not practical and consolidated the program at Locust Grove and Gordon-Barbour. Similar temporary site consolidations have happened in prior years as well, when the county Office on Youth operated the program.
Some families that enrolled later learned of the change during the enrollment process, and we understand why that caused frustration. We recognize that communication could have been clearer on the county website. We will work with Right at School to improve communication about any such changes in the future.
