Sunday's 94th Academy Awards made history with trailblazing winners -- and shocked viewers with a raw on-stage confrontation. A silence fell over the ceremony after Will Smith took offense to a joke made by Chris Rock about his wife, Jada Pinkett Smith. Smith walked onstage and smacked the comedian. When Rock tried to laugh it off, Smith directed expletives from his seat. After winning Best Actor for his role in King Richard, an emotional Smith apologized to the Academy. The drama nearly upstaged history as 'CODA' won best picture, marking a streaming first. Troy Kotsur became the first deaf actor to take home supporting actor honors for the film. Jane Campion won best director for "The Power of the Dog." Best actress went to Jessica Chastain -- winning her first Oscar for her empathetic portrayal of the televangelist Tammy Faye in "The Eyes of Tammy Faye." Hosts Wanda Sykes, Amy Schumer and Regina Hall began the telecast with topical humor. The first award went to Ariana DeBose. Her win came 60 years after Rita Moreno won for the same role in the 1961 original "West Side Story."
Chris Rock will not be pressing charges against Will Smith following their onstage altercation at this year's Oscars, the Los Angeles Police Department confirmed Monday.
