Bain A. Thompson FLOYD, Va. Bain A. Thompson, 84, walked into the loving arms of Jesus on Monday, March 17, 2014, after a very courageous 19 month long battle with pancreatic cancer. Bain was a master Volkswagen and Subaru mechanic. He worked many years at Highland Volkswagen, Shelor Volkswagen and Subaru, and the Bug Shop, where he retired in 2009. He was well known and respected by many throughout the NRV for his expertise and honesty. Bain had been a member of Floyd Baptist Church since 1962. He was a loving and devoted husband, father, grandfather, brother, and uncle. Bain was born in Floyd County on May 2, 1929, the 7th of 9 children born to William Jeffry and Virgie Lawrence Thompson. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Sherman and Harold, three sisters, Una Thompson, Angie Cox, and Eleanor Kilduff; two brothers-in-law, Tom Cox, and Tommy Kilduff; and two sisters-in-law, Iris Thompson, and Jane Thompson. Bain is survived by his loving wife of 61 years, Ruth Pauley Thompson of Floyd; three children and their spouses, David and Angela Thompson of Floyd, Paula and Bruce Smith of Copper Hill, and Darrell and Sheila Thompson of Floyd. Also surviving are six grandchildren, Amanda (Alex) Wilkens of Christiansburg, Robert Bain Smith of Radford, Katie Smith of Radford, Marlena (Matt) King of Floyd, Christopher Thompson of Floyd, and Andrew Thompson of Floyd; one great-grandchild, Kyleigh King of Floyd; three brothers and two sisters-in-law, Arlie and Chlonetia Thompson of Floyd, Merlin and Livie Thompson of Floyd, and Breeman Thompson of Sevierville, Tenn.; one sister-in-law, Joan Thompson of Dublin; and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins. The family would like to express appreciation to the caring staff of Blue Ridge Cancer Care, Radiology Associates of Roanoke Lewis-Gale, Gentiva Health Services, Good Samaritan Hospice of Christiansburg and Dr. Garry Kuiken & Staff at Primary Care Associates. A celebration of Bain's life will be held 11 a.m. Thursday, March 20, 2014, at Floyd Baptist Church with the Rev. Dan Agee and the Rev. Joe Womack officiating. Interment will follow at Jacksonville Burial Ground, Floyd. The family received friends from 6 until 8 p.m. Wednesday, March 19, 2014, at Maberry Funeral Home.
