Billy Edward Dunford, died on Wednesday, November 14, 2018, at Roanoke Memorial Hospital; a result of injuries he suffered on November 4, 2018, his 57th birthday. Billy was preceded in death by his father, William Richard Dunford; and brothers, Richard W. (Boger) Dunford, Robert Lee Dunford, Douglas Lee Dunford, and Joshua Paul Dunford. He is survived by his mother, Katie F. Dunford; and sisters, Rachel Fowler (Ronnie), Brenda Ogle (Robert), Carrin Conley (Clarence), Debbie Foutz (Terry), Sue Renfro (Jay), and Jennifer Dean (Brandon). He leaves behind two brothers, Brad Dunford (Linda) and William Dunford, and several nieces and nephews. Billy was known as an "institution" in the town of Max Meadows. He stood vigil in the heart of town either sitting in his blue truck, standing under the big oak tree beside the post office, or on the porch of the old store. Persons who passed through the town could count on receiving a friendly wave from Billy regardless of the weather. He was a dedicated hard worker, whether it would be as a farmhand on the Armentrout farm, or cutting loads of wood to sell. Regardless he did his jobs well. His wood was precisely cut and conscientiously stacked. Whoever one bought wood from Billy they knew they were getting a good load. Our "lighthouse" who was Billy, is now deeply and continually missed by his family, his friends and a community who found in him a source of warmth and blessing. Our community is not the same without him, he will not be forgotten. A funeral service for Billy was held on Tuesday, November 20, 2018, at 2 p.m. at the Barnett Funeral Home with Pastor N.R. Taylor officiating. An interment followed in the Mt. Zion Cemetery. Memorials for Billy Dunford may be received by the Barnett Funeral Home at 325 Church St, Wytheville, VA 24382, to help defray the cost of the funeral.
