RURAL RETREAT, Va. John Henry Evans, Jr., age 88, passed away on Thursday, December 21, 2017, at the Smyth County Community Hospital. Mr. Evans was born in Smyth County, Va. to the late John Henry Evans and Katherine Liddie Evans. He was also preceded in death by a grandson, Seth Evans; brothers, Monroe Evans, Tom Evans, and Roy Evans; and sisters, Nannie Mae Seabolt, and Polly Evans. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army and served during the end of World War II and in the Korean Conflict. He received several medals of valor including three bronze stars. He was a member of the Francis Marion V.F.W. Post 4667. Mr. Evans retired from the Bethlehem Steel Corporation in Sparrows, MD after 40 years of service. Following his retirement he was a cattle farmer. He was a member of the Church of God of Prophecy and attended the Word of Life Ministry and the Millennium World Outreach. Survivors include his wife of 71 years, Dorothy Evans; his children, Ronnie Joseph Evans and wife, Sherry of Greenville, Tenn., and John Vincent Evans, Rural Retreat; his grandchildren, India Evans and Angie McIsaac; great grandchildren, Ian McIsaac and Colbin McIsaac; brother, Glenn Evans and wife, Bessie; sisters, Lucille Prater, Marion, Va., and Barbara "Janie" Evans, Marion; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday, December 26, 2017, from the Bradley's Funeral Home in Marion with the Reverend Kent Lewis and the Reverend Roger Crigger officiating. Interment will follow in Rose Lawn Cemetery with full military honers being rendered by the Francis Marion VFW Post 4667. The family will receive friends Tuesday, from 12 until 1:30 p.m. prior to services. Expressions of sympathy may be sent to the family at www.bradleysfh.com.
