Religion and spirituality can play a surprisingly influential role in the lives of celebrities, even when their beliefs remain far from the public eye. From Hollywood stars with deep ties to Scientology and famous figures who eventually walked away from the organization, to celebrities raised in Mormon or Muslim households and stars who later embraced entirely different spiritual paths, these stories reveal a more personal side of fame. Here are some of the biggest celebrities whose religious beliefs, backgrounds, or spiritual journeys may surprise you. While many celebrities keep their religious beliefs private, others have openly discussed changing faiths or embracing new spiritual paths over the years. Snoop Dogg has described a series of spiritual and religious shifts throughout his career. In 2009, after attending an event in Chicago, he announced his involvement with the Nation of Islam. A few years later, in 2012, he adopted the name Snoop Lion and explored Rastafarianism, documenting that period in the film ‘Reincarnated.’ In 2018, he moved in a different direction again with the release of the gospel-inspired album ‘Bible of Love,’ and has since described himself as a born-again Christian. Orlando Bloom has been a practicing Buddhist since his teenage years and has often credited the philosophy with helping him stay grounded throughout his rise to fame. He was first introduced to Buddhism by a friend while studying, and later encountered the teachings of Buddhist leader Daisaku Ikeda, an experience he described as a significant moment in his spiritual journey. Shia LaBeouf, who was raised by a Jewish mother and a Christian father, has spoken about his renewed commitment to Christianity, which took shape while he was filming ‘Fury’ in 2014. He has since described that period as a turning point in his spiritual life, when his faith began to feel more real and grounding. He’s also credited on-set conversations with co-star Brad Pitt as part of the broader process of questioning and exploring his beliefs. In 2024, LaBeouf formally converted to Catholicism after being confirmed into the church, and has said he hopes to eventually become a deacon. Jane Fonda has also spoken about having a gradual spiritual shift later in life. Following her 2001 divorce from Ted Turner, she described becoming more aware of a sense of spiritual presence and moving toward a form of Christianity. However, she does not identify as born again. The ‘9 to 5’ actress has characterized her faith as something that developed over time into a more empowering outlook, which she has also connected to her broader feminist philosophy. You might be surprised to learn that several major celebrities actually grew up in the Mormon faith before forging their own paths. They’ve built careers across music, film, and comedy, but their religious backgrounds still helped shape who they are today. Dan Reynolds, frontman of Imagine Dragons, has been open about being brought up in a strict Mormon household. Speaking to People magazine, he described it as “really conservative,” and explained why he eventually chose a different path. “There’s obviously parts of the Mormon religion that I feel pretty strongly are harmful, especially to our gay youth,” he said, adding that despite their differences, he still maintains a loving relationship with his family. Although she has never spoken about Mormonism, pop icon Christina Aguilera is also believed to have been raised in the faith. Her parents reportedly married in the Washington DC Latter-Day Saints Temple, before later separating, and Aguilera went on to identify as Roman Catholic. She even married music executive Jordan Bratman in a traditional Jewish ceremony in 2005, but chose not to convert. Comedian Chelsea Handler had a mixed religious upbringing; her mother was Mormon, and her father was Jewish. Ultimately, she chose to follow Judaism, once telling Yahoo, “I chose Jewish obviously. Mormonism is so ridiculous. But I related to … that conflict of religion for both parents.” Actress Amy Adams has spoken more fondly about her Mormon childhood. She even told the Belfast Telegraph, “What I still feel and rely on from that kind of teaching, is how you can bring a lot of joy to the people around you by being positive and hopeful.” Ramadan is a sacred month observed by millions of Muslims worldwide. Even in the spotlight, many celebrities take time to fast, pray, and reflect on their faith. DJ Khaled is open about his Muslim faith and Palestinian heritage, often sharing videos of himself playing the adhan for his son and speaking about praying and reading the Qur’an daily. Zayn Malik regularly posts “Ramadan Mubarak” messages on social media to mark the beginning of the holy month.
