A lead artificial intelligence (AI) researcher at Anthropic has said that he believes there is a greater than 10% chance that AI could “kill all humans” within the next decade. In an X post, Anthropic safety executive Evan Hubinger wrote: “We really do earnestly believe AI could kill all humans! I personally think it is >10% within the next decade.” Hubinger’s dramatic post came after the sudden resignation of his colleague and fellow Anthropic researcher, Jacob Coxon. Coxon, 27, decided to leave the AI industry after spending the last three years pretraining AI models, first at OpenAI and then at its rival, Anthropic. In an X post, Coxon accused both companies of acting irresponsibly and “gambling with our lives” in the race to develop AI models capable of self-improvement. Coxon stated that AI companies are racing toward “superintelligence, the theoretical point at which an AI’s capabilities exceed human intelligence. Hubinger supported Coxon on X, noting that Anthropic is “trying its best,” but acknowledged that the company does not yet have a plan to ensure a superintelligent AI system will obey its creators. This comes after more than 1,000 tech industry employees called on the US Government to support a coordinated slowdown in the development of the most advanced AI systems.
