FrontPageBets editors break down Super Bowl 56
Even the most casual of bettors get drawn into the Super Bowl action through the hundreds of prop bets available -- many of them unique to the big game and fun conversation starters around the chips and salsa.
DraftKings calls them "Novelty Props," and you can wager on everything from the jersey number of the first player to score a touchdown to the person the game's MVP will thank first.
Some of the most popular Novelty Props:
Coin toss outcome
(-105 at DraftKings)
No need to wait for the game to start! The result of the coin toss -- along with which team will win -- is always one of the most popular novelty props as a fun way to kick off your Super Bowl betting action.
No advanced research or analytics needed for this one. However, history does slightly favor "tails," which has been the outcome 29 times (52.7%) compared to 26 for "heads" (47.3%).
BetMGM is offering the same odds on the coin toss outcome, with 60% of the bets so far backing "tails."
Any kick to hit uprights
(Yes +400, No -550 at DraftKings)
It doesn't matter if it ricochets in or deflects agonizingly wide of the target, any extra point or field goal attempt that makes contact with an upright qualifies.
The Bengals with standout rookie Evan McPherson and the Rams with Matt Gay have two of the best kickers in the game. They're also heavily utilized, combining for 34 total kick attempts through their six playoffs games.
McPherson is a perfect 12-for-12 in the postseason on field-goal attempts, but remember that one that squeezed just inside the left upright to help knock off Kansas City?
Gatorade color
The color of the Gatorade poured on the winning coach is traditionally one of the most-wagered novelty props. Or will it be Gatorade at all?
The shortest odds at DraftKings is +250 for the winning coach to be doused with water or some clear liquid. Next is Orange (+300), followed by Yellow/Green (+350) and Blue (+400).
The winning coach being spared a sideline shower is being offered at +600, with the longest odds being Red/Pink Gatorade (+1200) and Purple (+1400).
The favorite at BetMGM is Yellow/Green/Lime at +350, which has been backed by 31% of all tickets and money wagered on the prop.
Correct final score
It may not fall in the "novelty" category, but picking the exact score brings some serious bragging rights beyond just predicting the winner.
The Rams are holding as 4-point favorites at most sportsbooks, and the shortest correct final score odds at DraftKings are Los Angeles to win 27-24 (+6500). The next-shortest odds are a 34-31 win by the Bengals or a 27-20 Rams victory, both at +8000.
One bettor at BetMGM placed a $1,200 wager to win $200,000 at +20000 odds on Cincinnati claiming its first Super Bowl title with a 24-17 victory on Sunday.
