Adult Education Connection for week of April 29
Finding motivation is an important aspect for adult learning. Even though it can be difficult at times to figure out what adult students need to be motivated towards being successful, it is possible with the right information. According to research by adult education experts, there are several factors that can serve as sources of motivation for adult learners.
At the top of the list of motivating factors is building social relationships. Adults enjoy making new friends, which meets the need to have interactions and friendships. Another motivation for adult learning is to fulfill external expectations. Many adults will comply with instructions from other people who have influence or authority in their lives.
Numerous adult learners are motivated by helping within society, meaning they want to improve their abilities to serve others. Those individuals may have a goal of serving their communities and want to enhance their skills so that they can participate in providing support.
Some adults seek education to relieve boredom or to provide a break in the routine of home, work, and other demanding details of life. Adults can also be encouraged by learning for personal development. They may want to achieve higher status in a job or secure professional advancement.
Learning is often mandated for adults to meet competency or licensing requirements, to maintain current skills or learn new ones, to adapt to job changes, or to comply with company policies. Whatever the motivation, one can determine that in adult life, learning is expected and necessary to remain active in today’s workforce. Once adults see the benefit of learning, they are more likely to motivate themselves to participate.
