Woofstock: A celebration of dogs, Smyth Animal Rescue
SPorter
From a pup so little that at least one person was afraid to hold the tiny canine to majestic Great Danes, man and woman’s best friends of all sizes were celebrated in Chilhowie’s Town Park Saturday during Woofstock.
The annual event raised awareness of and funds for the non-profit Smyth Animal Rescue, which is devoted to animal rescue and operates the county’s animal shelter. Several of SAR’s adoptable dogs were showing their lovability Saturday.
As Woofstock held its pet show, the dogs available for adoption, who could also benefit from fosters and donations, got their turn on stage, demonstrating their skills and personalities.
During the pet show, dogs vied for best dressed, fastest peanut butter eater, and Pawsitively Imperfect among other categories. Benedict, a dog who had experienced brain trauma, won hearts as he shyly took first place in the Pawsitively Imperfect category and devoured peanut butter.
Woofstock also tried to help current pet owners out, offering a vaccine clinic and a demonstration of pet CPR.
The event also celebrated unfurry critters. A Department of Wildlife Resources representative brought a snake and educated folks of their benefits. Wildlife rehabilitator Darin Handy also helped teach about the value of snakes, lizards, turtles, and other animals.
Vendors offered an array of dog and human products. The Art Place helped youngsters make critter crafts to take home.
