Library Notebook: New month gets going at library
We end the week and start a new month today at your libraries, and here’s what’s happening today: Dungeons & Dragons gaming at the Wythe County Public Library in Wytheville starting at 10 a.m.; Back-to-School Storytime for preschoolers at the Fort Chiswell Public Library starting at 11 a.m., and the Adult Coloring Club, back at the Wythe County library at noon.

To celebrate Book Lovers’ Day, stop by the Wythe County library Monday or any time this week, bring a book recommendation to drop off or pick up a recommendation made by someone else;
The Online Cookbook Club starts a new month, the August themes being National Sandwich Month, National Peach Month and National Panini Month (Participants are invited to select a recipe, prepare it at home, and take photos of their completed dish. Share your photos by email at wythegraysonlibrary@gmail.com to join the conversation and inspire others);
The Meandering Mondays Book Club, a reader’s choice club where any book is open for discussion, at the Wythe County library at 1 p.m.;
Mahjong Monday at the Wythe County library starting at 4 p.m. where you can join in playing this Chinese tiles game;
The Lego Club for kids starting at 4:30 p.m., fun with Legos.
Okay, that’s Monday. Let’s plunge ahead to the rest of the week:
On Tuesday, the Book Lovers Day celebration continues at the Wythe County library and starts at the Rural Retreat Public Library (you can leave or pick up a book recommendation there, too).
In addition, a Little Readers’ Club is starting on Tuesdays from 4 to 5 p.m. at the Wythe County library for youngsters from kindergarten to second grade. Young readers can build confidence and strengthen essential literacy skills with the library’s Early Literacy Stations, located in the children’s area. Through engaging, interactive activities, children have the opportunity to practice key reading skills such as phonics, decoding, and encoding while learning at their own pace. Designed to support early literacy development, these stations provide a fun and educational way for children to reinforce classroom learning and develop a strong foundation for lifelong reading success.
Nope, that’s still not all: A Kids’ Bingo Night is scheduled for Tuesday from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. at the Wythe County library.
On Wednesday, the Book Lovers’ Day celebration expands to the Fort Chiswell Public Library at Max Meadows.
And at the Wythe County library on Wednesday, we have Back-to-School Storytime for preschoolers at 10 a.m.; “STEAM Day” for kids ages 3 to 6 (for more information, call 276-228-4951), and the Adult Coloring Club starting at noon.
A Young Readers Club is hosted at the Wythe County library on Thursday from 4 to 5 p.m., and this will continue each week on Thursdays at the same time. Join fellow readers for our Young Readers Novel Study Book Club for grades 3 to 5 , where participants read a selected book and then take part in engaging activities inspired by the story. Through discussion, hands-on projects, and interactive learning, participants strengthen reading comprehension, critical thinking, and literary analysis skills while exploring books in a fun and meaningful way. It’s perfect for young readers who enjoy diving deeper into the stories they read! Copies of books will be provided.
Which brings us to Friday, when the Twisted Stitchers get together at the Wythe County library to knit and socialize. Bring your knitting project and join them.
And, of course, the Book Lovers Day activities where you can bring in or take book recommendations continues all week at all three libraries.
