Library Notebook: Libraries closed for Labor Day
All of our libraries are closed today, as part of the extended Labor Day holiday. And of course they will be closed Monday, on Labor Day itself. But don’t worry, there’s plenty to make up for it going on the rest of next week.
On Tuesday, there is the Little Readers Club from 4 to 5 p.m. at the Wythe County Public Library in Wytheville. Young readers from kindergarten through second grade can build confidence and strengthen essential literacy skills with the library’s Early Literacy Stations, located in the children’s area. Through engaging, interactive activities, children have the opportunity to practice key reading skills such as phonics, decoding, and encoding while learning at their own pace. Designed to support early literacy development, these stations provide a fun and educational way for children to reinforce classroom learning and develop a strong foundation for lifelong reading success.
On Wednesday, there is Storytime for preschoolers (Elephants is the fun topic this week) starting at 10 a.m. at the Wythe County library. The Adult Coloring Club also meets there at noon.
Then, on Wednesday starting at 4:30 p.m., there is the special Hour of Code Hello Word, a fun and beginner-friendly introduction to computer programming. Through hands-on activities, participants will learn basic coding concepts, problem-solving skills, and how code powers the technology we use every day. This is the perfect starting point for anyone curious about coding. Bring your own laptop or tablet recommended to get the most from the experience. A USB flash drive or other storage device is also encouraged so you can save your work and continue exploring at home.
And that’s not all for Wednesday. There is also a Bingo Night, still at the Wythe County library, from 6 to 7 p.m., always a fun gathering.
That brings us to Thursday, when the Wythe County library offers its Young Readers Book Club from 4 to 5 p.m. for grades three to five. Join fellow readers where participants read a selected book and then take part in engaging activities inspired by the story. Through discussion, hands-on projects, and interactive learning, participants strengthen reading comprehension, critical thinking, and literary analysis skills while exploring books in a fun and meaningful way. Perfect for young readers who enjoy diving deeper into the stories they read. Copies of books will be provided.
On Friday, the Wythe County library hosts the Writing Writers, a group for anyone interested in any kind of writing, starting at 10 a.m. And then it’s the Twisted Stitchers for knitting enthusiasts, starting at 2 p.m.
Moving to the Rural Retreat Public Library, Dungeons & Dragons role-playing games will be held Friday from 4 to 7 p.m. Join us and get your game on.
