Caden Golliher rushed for 255 yards on 29 carries as the George Wythe Maroons edged Rural Retreat 26-21 in the latest edition of the Wythe County Super Bowl.
George Wythe (2-3) held off a late drive by Rural Retreat (2-3) for a crucial win in a game that was a back-and-forth affair.
“A big win like this is always an unreal feeling,” said GW senior Cade Bralley. “It was a wild game and I noticed we came into the game a bit more hot than normal. We ran the ball well in the first quarter and then we started to struggle a little bit. I think we then started to fine-tune the small things and got them fixed. We started to click together as a team. Defense played pretty well throughout the game. There were high and lows of course, but we stopped them when it mattered most.”
Isaac Smith added 65 rushing yards and passed for 109 yards, 66 of which came on a scoring strike to Bralley.
GW led 12-0 3 ½ minutes into the game but fell behind 14-12 early in the third quarter.
The Maroons rallied and bounced back from a loss at Patrick Henry the week before.
“This was a complete must-win,” Bralley said. “Last week definitely set us up to be really motivated, but we also knew what this game meant to us and our community. The key to this win was not letting the momentum go the wrong way. For a long time, we made sure to keep the energy high and we battled our way back after we went down during the third quarter. I was very proud of the way we came back from that. I’m just proud of the attitude we had throughout the whole game and that extremely hard work led us to the win tonight.”
Rural Retreat received 142 passing yards from Brody Allen and 114 rushing yards from Jake Rollyson. Allen and Rollyson rushed for touchdowns, while Allen threw a touchdown pass to Eli Atwell.
The Bland County Bears bested Richlands 20-25, 25-23, 25-11, 25-18.
Averie Fuller and Maddie Webb each had 10 kills and 15 assists for Richlands.
Rebels roll over Rural Retreat
Mia Owens reached the 1,000 landmark for career assists as the Rebels earned another Hogoheegee District win by a 25-15, 25-16, 25-10 score.
Erin South (14 kills), Andie Boone (seven kills) and Kinsley Counts (six kills) also played well for PH.
