On Monday night, VCU, Richmond, and Virginia State police officers in riot gear assembled outside the James Branch Cabell Library and declared an unlawful assembly, ordering the protesters to disperse.
In Virginia over the past three days, protests at Virginia Tech, Virginia Commonwealth University and the University of Mary Washington were busted up by police.Â
We've always tended to overstate America's embrace of dissent, as if those police dogs, fire hose blasts and tear gas cannisters aimed at protesters were somehow an aberration.Â
