Fueled by missing the College Football Playoff, Virginia opens spring practice on Monday with work to do like getting all of its newcomers on the same page.
“To be ready to go, that doesn’t just happen when a guy goes down," O'Brien said. "That starts from the second you come on campus as a true freshman all the way up to when your number’s called. (Grunkemeyer) was a living embodiment of that right there. Preparing every week like he was the starter long before he was.”
“I think the O-line itself, the guys that are coming back are better and healthy. They’re going to be better,” Moore said.
There's skepticism whether the Flames' CUSA schedule will stick amid litigation between the league and Louisiana Tech, but Liberty's 12-game schedule is set for now.
“We’ve got some really talented guys that I feel like are going to earn the opportunity to play, but they’ve got to prove that. They’ve got to prove that every day, just like the guys returning with experience.”

"You hear Coach Franklin talk about the Virginia Tech that the parents knew and all of that," Midget said, "that’s what we’re bringing back here and that’s our goal, and that’s what we’re striving to do to get that back to where it needs to be.”
Virginia football promoted Joey Orck from analyst to O-Line coach last month, and in doing so Orck earned his first position-coach job at the FBS level in his 19th year in the profession.
Virginia Tech football coach James Franklin said in early February that adding Jarrett Ferguson to Chuck Losey’s strength and conditioning staff was “merging the best of Virginia Tech with some of the things that we’ve done in the past I think is very important and has gone very well.”
