Tower Climb: The sixth annual 9-11 Big  Walker Lookout Tower Climb will be held Saturday, Sept. 12, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. 

Fish Fry: Barren Springs Volunteer Fire Department will have a Fish Fry on Sunday, Sept. 13. Menu consists of fried catfish, French fries, corn, green beans, hush puppies, slaw, dessert and a drink or ham, baked ham, French fries, corn, green beans, roll, slaw, dessert and a drink.  Adult plates are $12 and a kids plate is $6. 

Special Service: On Sept. 13 at 10:30 a.m. St. Paul Lutheran Church will hold a special service celebrating 250 years of serving this community. The congregation will celebrate those who have gone before, those continuing today, and those in the future who will keep the faith and minister to the needs of neighbors near and far. The church is at 331 St. Paul Church Road, Crockett. The service will be followed by a potluck lunch on the grounds and a hymn sing to raise a joyful noise.

 9/11 Memorial Ceremony:  On Sunday, Sept. 13, at 2 p.m., at the Wytheville Meeting Center, 333 Community Blvd, Wytheville, there will be a 25-year Memorial Program to Remember 9/11, a Day That Changed America.  The program is free and open to the public.  

 Plant-Based Cooking School:  Monday, Sept. 14, at 6:30 p.m., at the Wytheville SDA Church, 1600 Chapman Road, Wytheville. Come and join us as we are learning ways to prevent, reverse, and/or improve pre-diabetes and type II diabetes one bite at a time in a simple, delicious way. 100 Years of Music: The MacDowell Music Club is celebrating its 100^th season (1927-2027). On Sept. 21, the community is invited to join the celebration at 7 p.m. at Grace Lutheran Church on Main Street in Rural Retreat. George Bailey, vocalist, actor, general manager and producer of numerous musicals at Wohlfahrt Haus Dinner Theater in Wytheville, will present the free program. Everyone is welcome.

Library: The Friends of the Rural Retreat Public Library will meet on the second Monday of the month at the library from 2 to 3 p.m. 

Radio Club: The Briarpatch Amateur Radio Club serves amateur radio operators in Southwest Virginia and northwestern North Carolina. All amateur radio operator are invited to the on-air weekly gathering held each Tuesday night at 8 p.m. with a frequency of 147.090+ and 103.5 tone.
