Animal Shelter
Griffin comes back for a visit
We got a very special visit at the shelter this week! Griffin came back to visit the shelter staff, and it was so good to see how well this sweet boy is doing.
Griffin was a little hesitant at first, but once he saw his favorite shelter staff, he was all about saying hello—and showing off!
We want to thank Griffin’s dad for bringing him back for a visit. Seeing Griffin happy, healthy, and loved in his forever home means so much to everyone who cared for him while he was at the shelter.
Ginger Ann is still waiting for her chance
Ginger Ann has been waiting 188 days for someone to see what the shelter staff already know—a sweet, beautiful soul who deserves a chance at a loving home.
Ginger Ann arrived at the shelter in November as a stray. She appeared to have recently had puppies, but despite searching the area, no puppies were found and no family ever came looking for her. She was eventually named Ginger Ann, and over time, the staff grew more and more attached to this gentle girl.
Ginger Ann is a senior Pit Bull mix who loves food and treats, enjoys going for walks, and especially loves rolling around in the grass. Despite everything she may have been through, she remains a happy, loving girl who is still hoping someone will choose her.
During her spay, a 2 centimeter mammary mass was discovered. Her veterinarian recommends that it be removed, and she is still in need of that procedure. Ginger Ann is spayed, up to date on vaccines, microchipped, and 4DX tested negative.
After 188 days of waiting, Ginger Ann is still looking for her person. She deserves a future filled with love, comfort, and the chance to simply be someone's best girl.
Could you be the person Ginger Ann has been waiting for?
Ginger Ann is available for adoption and to 501(c)(3) shelter/rescue transfer partners. If you have questions about Ginger Ann or would like to meet her, please contact the shelter at (434) 985-5210. She is available to meet Monday, Tuesday and Friday from 10 AM – 2 PM and Saturday from 10 AM –3 PM.
Community dog food giveaway helps Greene County families
The Greene County Animal Shelter’s community dog food giveaway on Saturday, September 26, was a huge success! Thanks to an incredibly generous donation, the shelter was able to provide about 2,750 pounds of dog food to local families in need.
This was the shelter’s second community dog food giveaway of the year, helping families keep their furry friends fed and in their homes during difficult times. By the end of the day, the shelter had an empty van and plenty of tired—but thankful—staff!
A tremendous thank you goes to the generous donor who made this giveaway possible, as well as everyone in our community who came out to pick up food for their dogs.
The Greene County Animal Shelter is proud to be here for our community—two- and four-legged alike!
Route 624 (Beazley Road) bridge replacement
The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) has scheduled a Design Public Hearing regarding the subject project for Tuesday, October 13, 2026, from 5 PM to 7 PM at Greene County Library, 222 Main Street #101, Stanardsville, VA 22973. In the event of inclement weather, the hearing will be rescheduled for Wednesday, October 21, 2026, from 3:30 PM to 5:30 PM at the same location.
The purpose of the hearing is to allow the public the opportunity to review Public Hearing plans, the environmental documentation, and tentative schedules for the replacement of the existing Route 624 (Beazley Road) bridge over Blue Run in Greene County. VDOT proposes to replace the existing steel beam and timber deck bridge with a single-span, prestressed concrete deck bridge, and an asphalt riding surface. The new bridge will feature two travel lanes and shoulders, plus a new concrete railing along the sides of the bridge.
The hearing format will be an informal, open-house with no formal presentation. Stop by to review the project's layout, ask questions, and submit your comments. Representatives from VDOT will be available to answer questions and receive written comments. A court reporter will be present to take oral comments.

Piedmont Virginia Community College (PVCC) celebrates new Healthcare Simulation & Skills Lab
Piedmont Virginia Community College (PVCC) celebrated the ribbon cutting of its new Healthcare Simulation Lab and renovated Healthcare Skills Lab at the Eugene Giuseppe Center on Monday, August 31.
The new and renovated spaces build on the Eugene Giuseppe Center’s more than 14-year history of expanding educational opportunities for Greene County and the surrounding community. Since the Center opened in 2012, more than 300 William Monroe High School students have earned an associate degree through the Greene County Early College Scholars Program while completing their high school diplomas.
The healthcare labs represent another investment in local students and the region’s healthcare workforce. Students can participate in realistic patient-care simulations, practice clinical procedures, strengthen critical thinking and clinical judgment, and build confidence before entering clinical placements and the workforce.
The project was made possible through partnerships and support from Sentara Martha Jefferson Hospital, the Sentara Cares Program, the Virginia Community College Workforce Pipeline Initiative, the PVCC Educational Foundation, UVA Health, and generous donors and community partners. Support from Sentara Martha Jefferson Hospital also allowed PVCC to hire a full-time Healthcare Simulation Coordinator to expand simulation-based learning across healthcare programs.
The new technology will eventually allow simulation exercises at the Eugene Giuseppe Center to connect with labs at PVCC’s main campus, expanding learning opportunities while reducing travel time for students and faculty.
The ribbon cutting marked an important milestone in PVCC’s continued efforts to expand access to education, strengthen healthcare workforce preparation, and support the future of Greene County and Central Virginia.
Jaunt
PATH launches Address Lookup Tool
Residents across the Charlottesville region now have a simpler way to determine whether Jaunt services are available at their address. PATH has launched a new online Address Lookup Tool designed to help riders quickly identify if they live within Jaunt’s service area and which Jaunt transportation services may be available to them.
The tool is especially helpful for individuals who are unfamiliar with Jaunt’s service boundaries or are unsure which of the organization’s transportation programs operate in their community. By entering an address, users can instantly receive information about the Jaunt services available at that location.
The Address Lookup Tool provides a convenient starting point for anyone exploring transportation options, including older adults, people with disabilities, commuters, and residents of rural communities throughout the region.
Whether you are looking for regular public transit or ADA paratransit services provided by Jaunt, the new tool can help connect you with the right service more quickly and easily.
Ride Jaunt app now available in Greene County
Originally announced on April 7, 2026, Jaunt’s Ride Jaunt mobile app is now available in Greene County, giving residents a faster and more convenient way to book and manage local on-demand rides.
Ride service through the app began April 14, 2026. Greene County residents can now download the Ride Jaunt app from the Apple App Store or Google Play and use it to schedule eligible trips within Greene County.
A simpler way to ride
The Ride Jaunt app gives Greene County riders another easy way to access local transportation. With the app, riders can:
- Book local trips directly from their smartphone
- Schedule pickups more quickly
- Manage ride details from their mobile device
- Benefit from improved service coordination
- Access same-day ride options within the Greene Today Zone, depending on availability
For riders traveling within the Greene Today Zone, trip requests can typically be scheduled for pickup within about an hour or less, depending on availability.
Designed for Greene County
At launch, Ride Jaunt service through the app is available exclusively within Greene County. All trips booked through the app must begin and end within Greene County limits.
This local service model helps Jaunt provide responsive, reliable transportation that supports the daily needs of Greene County residents, including trips to work, healthcare appointments, grocery stores, errands, and other essential destinations.
More ways to book
The Ride Jaunt app is an added booking option, not a replacement for phone reservations.
Riders who prefer to schedule by phone can continue to call Jaunt’s Reservations team for ride bookings and customer support.
Connecting Greene County through care and technology
For nearly 50 years, Jaunt has served as a vital transportation link across Central Virginia, connecting residents to healthcare, employment, education, shopping, and essential services in both rural and urban communities.
The Ride Jaunt app builds on that legacy by combining Jaunt’s trusted, community-focused service with modern technology designed to make transportation easier and more accessible for riders.
Download and get started
Greene County residents can download the Ride Jaunt app today from the Apple App Store or Google Play.
For ride bookings or customer support, call (434) 296-3184 or use the Ride Jaunt app.

Fall & winter safety tips
Fall and winter bring plenty of opportunities to enjoy the outdoors, from hunting and Halloween to campfires, changing leaves, and cooler temperatures. They also bring safety concerns such as shorter daylight hours, reduced visibility for drivers, hunters, and pedestrians, and increased fire risks from fireplaces and heating equipment.
The National Safety Council reports that preventable injuries in the home and community remain a significant concern. Common causes of preventable injury-related deaths include poisoning, falls, choking, drowning, and fire or smoke. Taking simple precautions at home and in the community can help keep you and your family safe.
As we head into the colder months, residents are encouraged to use trusted safety resources, including:
- National Safety Council: Halloween and seasonal safety information at www.nsc.org
- National Weather Service: Information on cold weather, winter storms, wildfire, wind, and other weather hazards at www.weather.gov/safety
- U.S. Fire Administration: Home fire, heating, fireplace, outdoor fire, smoke alarm, and carbon monoxide safety at www.usfa.fema.gov
- National Fire Protection Association: Winter and home fire safety at www.nfpa.org
- American Red Cross: Home fire, cooking fire, heating fire, and holiday safety information at www.redcross.org
Be prepared in Greene County
Residents can also take steps now to prepare for emergencies. Greene County provides information about emergency notifications, preparedness, and creating an emergency plan. Residents can sign up for local alerts and choose how and what types of notifications they receive at www.greenecountyva.gov/343/Alerts-Notifications.
For more information about community emergency preparedness, visit Greene County Virginia CERT at www.GreeneCERTVa.org or email info@greenecertva.org.
Fall and winter activities can be fun and enjoyable. Take practical safety steps to help ensure you and your family have a safe season!
Be sure to visit CERT and ARES at the Farmer’s Market on October 24 from 8:00 AM - 12:00 PM to learn more about emergency preparedness and prevention.
Greene County Emergency Management hosts SKYWARN training
Greene County Emergency Management hosted a Basics SKYWARN class on Thursday, September 24, 2026, at Stanardsville Volunteer Fire Company.
SKYWARN, founded in the early 1970s, is a group of trained weather volunteers who work with the National Weather Service by observing and reporting severe weather conditions. While weather technology has come a long way, trained volunteers are still an important source of information from the ground.
During severe weather, SKYWARN spotters may be asked to report conditions such as damaging winds, hail, flooding, or other dangerous weather. Reports can be shared with the National Weather Service by phone, amateur radio, social media, or an online storm report form.

Treasurer
Dear Citizens,
Fiscal Year 2026 (July 2025 - June 2026) marked the first year operating under the Treasurer’s Investment Policy that I developed and adopted for the management and investment of Greene County’s public funds.
With the fiscal year now complete, I am pleased to share that Greene County earned $793,993 in interest and investment income on public funds during FY26.
For comparison, FY25 earnings totaled $390,431, representing an increase of approximately $403,562, or 103%, over the prior fiscal year. These results were achieved while additional County funds were being strategically invested throughout the early months of the fiscal year, meaning the full investment strategy was not in place for the entire year.
While the results are significant, they also demonstrate the importance of having a formal framework for the management of public funds. I am proud of what we accomplished in the first year under this policy. Every additional dollar earned is revenue that helps reduce what the County must collect from taxpayers elsewhere. This is good stewardship and a standard I will continue to uphold for the citizens of Greene County.

2026 Medicaid & SNAP benefit updates
New federal requirements are bringing changes to Medicaid and SNAP eligibility in Virginia. Greene County residents who receive these benefits are encouraged to stay informed, keep their information current, and watch for notices from Virginia agencies.
Medicaid changes
Beginning January 1, 2027, new federal work requirements will apply to some adults ages 19–64 enrolled in Virginia Medicaid Expansion. Individuals who are subject to the requirement may need to work, participate in an approved activity, attend school, volunteer, or meet an income requirement. Several exemptions apply, including for certain parents and caregivers, people with disabilities or special medical needs, pregnant individuals, and people enrolled in Medicare Part A or Part B.
Those affected will also have their Medicaid eligibility reviewed every six months instead of annually. Virginia Medicaid will provide information to members before action is required. Residents should keep their mailing address, phone number, email, employment, income, and household information up to date and carefully review all Medicaid notices.
SNAP changes
SNAP eligibility and work requirements have also changed. Residents who are affected by these changes may be required to work, participate in an approved work activity, or qualify for an exemption to continue receiving SNAP benefits.
Beginning October 1, 2026, SNAP benefits in Virginia will no longer be able to be used to purchase sweetened carbonated beverages, including soda. This change does not reduce SNAP benefit amounts or affect eligibility.
Help is available
If changes to SNAP eligibility result in difficulty accessing food, Virginia DSS provides information about food banks, food pantries, community organizations, Virginia Fresh Match, summer nutrition programs, WIC, and other resources.
Greene County residents who have questions about how these changes may affect their benefits should contact Greene County Social Services or review the resources below. Keep your information current, read all notices carefully, and respond by any deadline provided.
