Liberty at the Lake: Celebrate America’s 250th birthday July 3-5 at Rural Retreat Lake. Admission is free. Things kick off Friday at 4:30 p.m. with crafts, vendors and food trucks. At 6 p.m. there will be a horseshoe competition, with a star spangled splash pool party at 6 p.m. and the Midnight Blue band on stage at 8:30 p.m. Fireside tales a s’mores are on the menu at 9:30 p.m. The fun starts Saturday at 9 a.m., with a pool party running till 6 p.m. A Stars and Strides Color Run is set for 10:30 a.m., with All Star professional wresting at 3 p.m. Closing out the night is a foam and bubble party from 8 to 10 p.m. On Sunday, the day kicks off at noon, with kids inflatables, a 1 p.m. laser battle, a 4 p.m. cornhole tournament, a foam and bubble party, an air guitar competition. The Holiday Band takes the stage at 6 p.m., with the movie “Captain America” planned for 8:30 p.m.
Heroes Showdown: A fun game of softball, with hospital staff taking on EMT responders will be held Saturday, July 4, at 10 a.m. at Wytheville Community College.
Movie Night: Wythe County Parks and Recreation will host movies at Rural Retreat Lake this summer with free admission. On July 5, the movie is “Captain America: The First Avenger.”
Chicken Dinner: The Speedwell Volunteer Fire Department will have its annual chicken barbecue dinner Sunday, July 5, at 11 a.m. The menu includes half a chicken, baked beans, slaw, roll, dessert and tea or lemonade.
Used-Book Sale: On Friday, July 10, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., and on Saturday, July 11, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., in the little red bookshop behind the Wythe County Public Library, 300 E. Monroe St., Wytheville, the well-attended book sales are continuing. All are welcome! Come and browse and take home some good reads!
Plant-based Cooking School: Monday, July 13, at 6:30 p.m., at the Wytheville SDA Church, 1600 Chapman Road, Wytheville. Come and join us as we are learning ways to prevent, reverse, and/or improve pre-diabetes and type II diabetes one bite at a time in a simple, delicious way. Carnival: The Lions Club Charity Carnival will be held July 14-18 at Wytheville Community College Campus. Gates open at 6 p.m. and rides run from 6:30 p.m. till 10 p.m. Tickets are $1.25 each, 24 for $25, 72 for $60 and rides require three or more tickets each. Ride all night wrist bands are $30 and can be purchased online.
Fundraiser: Ivanhoe Fire Department will have a Donnie Widner Memorial Fundraiser on Saturday, July 18, from noon to 5 p.m. at the Ivanhoe Fire Department. There will be baked goods, hot dog sale, silent auction, raffle drawings, kids water play area, face painting and vendor tables.
Special Olympics: Mount Rogers Community Services will have a Special Olympics Field Day on Thursday, July 23, from noon to 4 p.m. at the Wytheville Community College Field.
Street Fair: Wytheville Training School Cultural Center's 5th Annual Street Fair will be held on Saturday, July 25, from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Heritage Day: Rural Retreat Heritage Day will be held Saturday, July 25, at 1 p.m. at the Pepper Stage, 210 E. Railroad Avenue. Along with kids activities, don’t miss the music. A Conway Twitty tribute takes the stage at 5 p.m., followed by Deadma’s Hand at 6:30 p.m. and Diamond Rio at 8:15 p.m. Admission is free.

Movie Night: Wythe County Parks and Recreation will host movies at Rural Retreat Lake this summer with free admission. On Aug. 1, the movie will be “Zootopia 2.”
Radio Club: The Briarpatch Amateur Radio Club serves amateur radio operators in Southwest Virginia and northwestern North Carolina. All amateur radio operator are invited to the on-air weekly gathering held each Tuesday night at 8 p.m. with a frequency of 147.090+ and 103.5 tone.
